i wanted to reconfigure my pc by using the install discs that came with the pc and start all over cuz there were problems popping up all the time. when i put the first disc in there was an error and i couldn't continue. is my hd going or is it the board or something else? the disc is not damaged so it must be the pc. what do you suspect it is?

lol...ok so when i pop in the compaq quickrestore cd(which contains win 98) it goes thru the motions for a few seconds and then error # 180:14 or 182:14 appears. it instructs to contact compaq or dealer...when the quickrestore cd isn't used the win98 screen flashes for a second and goes to the c prompt screen and that's where it stays.

What hardware has changed in this PC since it was new? Have you done agoogle search on that error message, or asked Compaq,or checked their message boards?

It would appear that your Windows 98 installation is corrupted. Its booting to DOS but failing to load Windows.
Until you find out what Error 180:14 or 182:14 means there is nothing that can be done.
Once you know what these errors mean, the solution might be very simple or it could mean replacing something. Who knows?

"If you get error 180:14 or 182:14 trying to reset your computer using the Quick Restore CD, don't worry.
Simply PUT ON the CAPS LOCK and the NUM LOCK before the Quick Restore CD start.
You will be able to avoid the problem, using the "OEM Mode" of the Quick Restore CD,
