Hi,
I can't seem to open any of the true type font files under windows 95 what can i do? what component in windows is responsible for opening these files?

By default, ttf file is associated with fontview.exe in \windows. Those hidden and system ttf files are system fonts. Do not play around with them without a specific reason. You risk to breakdown the system.

How do i get windows to open my fonts ? when i double click on any font file it doesn't open, how do i solve this problem

[1] Go to the Setting Folder Options.
[2] From the Registered File Types window, locate the font file (extension FON).Can you do the above? Can you find that file type? Post back. The action depends on the result.

[3] If you have font file there associated, then highlight it, then click on the Edit button on the right.
[4] Under Actions window, you should find normally at least Open and Print. Are they there?
Post back.

[5] If yes, highlight the Open by clicking on it, then push Edit Button below.
[6] On the Application to Perform the Action, the command line should be like this :
c:\windows\fontview.exe
If it is not, write the line down just in case you want to restore back to the existing state and type in the above line. Then click OK.
[7] Inspect the Open again, see if it is in Bold Letters. If not, highlight it again, and click on the Set Default button.You should be done at least for the purpose of viewing font file with fon extension.
With ttf file, substantially the same, but need more complicated settings.
So try out 'fon' file first. Go to Fonts control panel, and double click on the font like Courier, see if you can trigger the view.
Post back.

the following line "c:\windows\fontview.exe" was already written and open was bold , still i could not open the file with extension FON , it may be of any help to know that i can open the font files in safe mode.

No, it doesn't matter whether it is in normal or safe.
Check the fontview.exe is in your c:\windows\ by Start-Find, OK?
Also, inspect the rightclick menu when you highlighted a 'fon' file see if Open is there?
What other problems do you know of about your present system? Why do you suddenly come up with the idea of viewing font file? Are there some error messages which lead you there?

ok, fontview.exe exists in my windows folder
if u mean when i right click the courier font does it have OPEN , yes it does , i click it mouse pointer changes to open mode for a 2 sec wait for ages but nothing happends .
About the thing that lead me to all this , i could not start any of my office 97 programs it gave me a message saying that tahoma font is not present ( even though it was in the fonts folder) i tried the solutions at microsoft's site which were : install the font, that didn't work
reinstall office , didn't work either
and their was a fix pack that i tried but it didn't work . any idea's what the problem might be?

OK, do the following. No guarantee to fix the problem, but it will assure its sanity.
[a] Boot into real-Dos mode.
[b] Enter command groups and watch the results.c:\>cd\windows [enter]
c:\windows>attrib -h -s ttfcache [enter]
c:\windows>del ttfcache [enter]cd command [enter]
c:\windows\command>extract /a [cdrom_path:]\win98\win98_22.cab /l c:\windows\fonts tahoma*.ttf [enter]
(one line, no line break)[c] reboot normal.

Above presume your os is win98 and your installation cdrom in [cd_path:\] drive. Adapt to your real situation if it is win95, and drive eg d:\.
Also answer yes to replace for the extract.

what does the extract command do ?
extract /a [cdrom_path:]\win98\win98_22.cab /l c:\windows\fonts tahoma*.ttf [enter]
what does the above line do ? is there any risk in this ?
Thanks for your patience

Uuummmmm, wanna make this simple. Right click on the font file and choose Install. Or you can go to C:\Windows\Fonts and the to File, Install and browse for the font of your choice. Windows will now see the font.
HTH,
wcr3d

That command will replace your tahoma.ttf and tahomabd.ttf by the brand new corrupt-free ones in the installation cd.
Follow is the expanded descriptive version of the line : {SPACE} IS THE KEYBOARD SPACE
EXTRACT {SPACE} /Y {SPACE}
/A {SPACE} d:\win98\win98_22.cab {SPACE}
/L {SPACE} c:\windows\fonts {SPACE}
TAHOMA*.TTF [ENTER]All in one line, only {SPACE} is the effective space. It also incorporated the /Y, so no need to answer the prompt to replace. The d:\ is your cdrom drive.
