where can i get info on what files are needed to run the various programs/components that come with windows 95
i intend to use this info in order to make a minimized version of win 95
i know there are sites that claim it has been done. but the mini and micro 95 s that i found on the web are not very attractive to me because they give rude error messages due to non availability of necessary filesi wanna be a hacker

I don't know what anyone wants to run Win95 in this day & age, but to each his own...
Using a program called 98Lite, you can create a Win98/Win95 "hybird" that needs less than 100MB of space. I've experimented with it just to see what it was all about & during that limited time, it appeared quite stable
http://www.litepc.com/98lite.html

You could "likely" install with the original 13-disk floppy-version in about 30MB with a custom-install (i.e. minimal) option, then bring that up to a "usable" system in 40MB (including a browser, office suite, calculator, text-editor) if you could hunt down some old apps...
It would pose an interesting challenge...heck, I may even try it myself just to find out...

Granted, that wouldn't take into account what free space was needed for the actual install (about 60MB), and a swap file...

i am already online with a < 40 MB installation
i feel it can be trimmed down further
as to why i am using 95 , because it is sufficient for my needs
i am just doing this trimming down for fun, but i would appreciate some ideasi wanna be a hacker

This above site mentions 40mb being about the smallest install for win95.That's trimmed down from 72mb ain't bad.I don't know where your headed but,Format makes it as small as it will possibly go.
I believe you have reached the max shrink if that's a thing. Good luck though.

Unless you could get the cluster size down to 512bytes, 40 or so meg does sound about right. I did a custom install of 95 ages ago with what i needed on a 2gig Fat32 partiton (95b) and got it to about 96 meg thats with a swap file, text editor, WMP 6.4 with v7,8 and 9 codecs. It would be fun to have a 40 meg version :P .

From what I've read, you can actually get it down to about 8MB...even smaller using disk compression, but it's so lean, it's not very useable...LOL
If I can find the site again, I'll post it.

i have made a batchfile which will extract only the necessary files from the cab files and make a custom "install"
if anybody is interested i can email it
you can go through it and improve it
it comes with suitable system files ( system.ini win.ini system.dat and user.dat )

I would think you could do it in less than 40MB; pulling out some of the stuff you don't really need and replacing it with a smaller size version...
Example: The generic calculator in WinME is 98064 bytes, in Win'98 it's 94208 bytes, in the original '95 it's 59392 bytes, but in Win 3.0 (which still works on '95/'98/ME) it's only 40480 bytes. There's other replacement apps/accessories that would work just as well here:

Guess it really all depends on what you'd call a "usable" system...

in the 9MB and 5MB mini95 s, the technique used has been
1. delete a file
2. see whether it works
thats why it is not very usable
the bulk of files in c:\windows are in the system directory
so if there is a sure fire way to determine what files in the system directory are realy needed and what files are just sitting there it would help a lot
that was the info i requested in the first place
thanks for the responses anyway
lets wait and see if someone comes up with the info needed
and by the way, my 40MB is after installing drivers and other neccessary accessories
the original "install" is only 23MB and is very usable. also i have modified system.ini so that the swap file is outside c:\windowsi wanna be a hacker

Scroll below to "Finding NTDLL.DLL" post for some ideas on dependancy tools. The Import list tells which .dll's are needed by an .exe.
Also there are tools to search for "orphan" dll's such as:

or
