Subject: What kind of wireless card to get?
OS: 98 SE
CPU/Ram: 667Mhz/128MB
Model/Manufacturer: HP
Comment:
I just recently moved into an apartment where they have the wireless internet only, no ethernet-type connection, so I need to get a wireless card for my desktop. However, at the store, there are these different types of cards to get, with different kinds of bit rates, etc., so I don't really know which one to get.

Thanks.

I wouldn't get a 'card'. I'd get a USB wifi. Usually same cost or less and much easier to position for good signal.

You probably won't go wrong with D-Link or LinkSys.

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

Whichever type you get, get one that is 802.11g compatible. It will be backward compatible with 802.11b which are the only two standards you need worry about. 802.11g is the current standard and will give you 54 Mbs.

You may come across 802.11n. This is an emerging standard with a higher bit rate but has not yet been ratified so you may run into compatibility problems with one of those.
