Hi,
I'm curious about a 44.3 KB file named "Smartdrv.exe" located in my Windows directory. What function(s) does it serve?

It is a real mode 16bit cd-rom ram cache driver. Win98 will load it during setup if 32 bit drivers aren't detected, in order to speed up read/write by caching in conventional mem or UMBs. Setup will also install Smartdrive on your system & place a call for it in autoexec.bat.

Smartdrv.exe is a disk caching program that comes with DOS. Using it is one of the easiest ways to boost your system’s performance

You mean using it WHEN IN DOS may improve your system performance. It won't do anything to improve Windows performance.
