I have a 486-80 running win95. When I boot up sometimes the screen gets blurry sort of like some screen saver starting. If I move the mouse around or click on the background it doesn't clear up. If I click on any icon it will clear up immediately but then it is hung up and won't run others programs. It does have (had others) screen saverprograms installed but I am not certain that is the cause. When I push it comes up with a whole list of programs that are 'running'. I don't recognize most of them. The ones that regularly say they are NOT responding are Tapiexe (not responding); Connect (not responding); Ptsnoop (not responding). The Connect seems to be the loader for the AT&T net connector that is used for ISP; but it hasn't run yet???? I haven't found any reference to the tapiexe; still working on that one. Tapiexe (not responding is in there sometimes and not others). I did find a line in the win.ini file that says load=ptsnoop. Ptsnoop (not responding) is in there more often than not. How can I get rid of these problems????? Please help me.

Hmmmm... not sure about the Ptsnoop but the Tapiexe is the win 95 "telephony application programing interface". I think its used in Dial up adaptors and networking. Sounds like you may have some courpt software. might be easiest to just reinstall.

PTSNOOP is a token program that waits for some program to request the COM port to be opened. Then it makes sure that the drivers get loaded. The total memory impact is less than one meg of RAM, for everything that the HSP software does, such as 56k modem software.

the trick is to stop it from loading on startup. and to do that you need to edit your win.ini file.
click Start/Run
then type sysedit and click OK
a series of windows will open, bring win.ini to the front. You will see something like this:

[windows]
load=ptsnoop.exe
run=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\cmmpu.exe
NullPort=None

make it look like this:

[windows]
load=
run=
NullPort=None

Click file then save and reboot.
thats all there is to that.

Ptsnoop.exe is part of your modem program files. BUT it can also act as an encasement for a trojan virus, thereby making it undetectible. Before altering it you should consider getting a trojan detection and removal program so you can scan it first. I suggest "TC Active"/"The Cleaner" for scanning files etc. Good luck!
