What is a BIOS? And how can I get an updated one? My system says that I need to get an updated one. What do I need to do. I don't even know what a BIOS is...lol.

http://www.windrivers.com/identity/mboard/index.htm
this website explains how to identify your bios and you can find updates, if its available

I, and others, have read and recommend that you do NOT update your bios unless absolutely necessary. For example, putting a large hard drive into an old system is not a reason. I have an old Backard Pell that I use for backups--its a P-133, and I have a 10gb or so hd in it, with the supplied overlay software. Works just fine. The THING IS, if you do an update and it fails, then what????((!!!)))??? Does your bios chip unplug from a socket? If so, and the board isn't toooooo old, you may be able to get a replacement. If its soldered on, then youre welll, wyou are , uh, fixed, yeah, that's whut, fixed. You're really fixed, that's what you are.
I would NOT do an upgrade, until you investigate what this error message is and if there is another approach to the problem.

I would concur about the advice on not upgrading it unless nessisary. What says you need an upgreaded one? The computer itself won't decide that it needs to upgrade the BIOS.
For a definition of BIOS and other computer related words, checkout www.whatis.com you may also want to check out www.howstuffworks.com to explain how the BIOS works.
about being fixed this nessisarly isn't always the case. I've seen a few PCs with procedures to reverse a flash gone bad.

BIOS is, like matt says above, the basic
input output system on your pc's motherboard.
It detects f.ex. the monitor, RAM, floppy and
HDD so that your operating system can be loaded.

Although you should be able to, you pretty much cannot upgrade the BIOS. I am not talking about flashing a bios but of replacing it such as when the upper hard drive limit went from 540 Mbytes to 8.4 Gigabytes. The people who were supposod to be selling upgrades (Unicore, etc) would not do so making it necessary to upgrade the whole motherboard.
The BIOS is the place you go when you hold the delete key down as you boot. In it you put the time, date and size of drive A:. It usually auto detects the size of your hard drive, but you used to have to enter cylinders, heads and sectors for it.
This information is held in a CMOS memory which will be deleted if the CMOS battery goes dead.
