What happened to config.sys and autoexec.bat

I Recently posted a message about a berzerk CD-ROM Drive but now I am wondering if a virus could be the problem. I am running Windows 98.When I try the command "ren autoexec.bat autoexec.cpq " in DOS Mode I get a "file not found error". When I try "ren config.sys config.cpq" I get a "file in use error". In addition to that I get a blank window with no text when I run the system configuration utility and open the config.sys and autoexec.bat tabs. System file checker does not detect any problems though. When I try to Selectively Boot the system the check boxes for autoexec.bat and config.sys are disabled, only the final three options are available. Even though I have removed the drivers for the CD-Rom drive in continues to pop in and out and when I try to do a thorough disk check with ScanDisk it stops responding at the last 50000 clusters or so.I get a "System Unstable" death screen and have to power down. Later on the CD-ROM drivers inexplicably reappear in the device manager. Virus Scan does not detect any viruses but its probably not up to date. I am not in a position to get the update yet so what do you guys think, is it a virus? The computer functions almost perfectly in other respects and OK starts in normal mode. Thanks in advance.

Windows 95/98 do not require the autoexec.bat and config.sys files. Most of the commands that run from these are now resident in the IO.sys file. You will have to manually create Autoexec.bat and config.sys files if you want to use them.
Summary: Yes, both config.sys and autoexec.bat should be in the root directory of C: You might not need either one! Is there something that isn't working right?...
Summary: Long story shortened. Backing up system by adding new HD. Installed my 95B. Crashed the old HD and new 95 is giving me error messages and will only boot SAFE MODE and Step-by-Step if I don't don't lo...
Summary: I wouldn't change config.sys and autoexec.bat much, if the computer works properly. I would add "DOSKEY" to autoexec.bat, and "LASTDRIVE=Z" to config.sys just in case. I recently deleted autoexec.bat ...
