what causes the errors on cd-r's?

It could be a number of things. 1)the original CD could have copy protection on it 2)the software you are using could be outdated or just bad (I use Nero) 3)the burner's firmware is outdated 4)the burner is outdated 5)If you dont know what you are doing it could be you ;) --Raf

The burner is brand new, it is a ricoh 7060 6x4x24x and I use the newest version of adaptec directcd and easy cd creator. I think it may be a way for the Cd makers to force us to buy more. The protection thing wasn't my problem because I just put in a new one and it worked the second time. I'm just curious why this happens.

Maybe you should try writing the CD at 2x, takes a little longer but found it more consistent.

Are you buying 'cheap' CD-R's?
There are silver, gold & blue ones (that's the colour on the recording surface) - the silver ones tend to be the cheapest. I've had problems with those on a Traxdata at 2 x speed :(
