Weird fonts

Hi: Can anyone tell me why all my documents suddenly have weird symbols in them? Every document I open has the same problem. Also, instead of opening in Microsoft Office, they all open now in Word. I wish I could show you how they look, but it doesn't show up here. They have strange P symbols and little boxes. I do a lot of typing and would really appreciate someone telling me how I can correct this. Thanks a million.

"instead of opening in Microsoft Office, they all open now in Word"

Micorsoft Office is not a program, it is a suite of programs including Word, Excell Powerpoint, Access, etc. Your document always would have opened in Word.

The little boxes usually indicate your fonts have become corrupt. Try using a different font and see if that helps. You could also try a detect and repair found under the help catagory.

I wonder if you mean that within the text there are blocks of characters that look like this

Is so it is a sure sign that you have opened in the wrong program. They could have gone to WordPad, Works, WordPerfect or some other word processor. They also could be old files that do not display properly with a later version of Word (unless requested).

If they do look like this tell me the file extensions you mean (probably .doc). Perhaps they need re-associating with another program.

As has already been said Word is part of Office. Does it say "Microsoft Word" at the top - if so that is what most folk use for documents. Does this happen with "all" documents including new ones? What version of Word are you using? Have you recently updated Office or Word?

I wonder if the funny P symbols and little boxes might be the paragraph marks in Word ?

On the Standard toolbar, click the Hide/Show icon.

Krystyna You hit the nail right on the head! I can't believe how silly that was. Yes, it was the paragraph symbol and I clicked the Show/Hide and it's gone! Unbelievable! I can't thank you all enough -you're always right there when I need you. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I know it sounds ridiculous, but I was going nuts trying to fix this. You've really saved my sanity. Thanks again.
