Thanks for all the help, guys.
I did a full anti-virus scan (NAV), and a spyware scan (Ad-aware) but found nothing -- and that only adds to my worry.
Also, sorry about the miss-spelling: it IS WINIPCFG.exe. And the file IS the real one.
Could all this have something to do with this kernel core component thing? This is because these crazy programs started to access the Net only after I blocked out this Win32 Kernel thingie, though it may be just a coincidence.
Also, I noticed these WINAMPa (Winamp agent, I think) and task monitor programs in the registry's startup section (y'know, the HKEY/LOCAL_MACHINE/.../RUN or RUNSERVICES thing). Could these have anything to do with it?
Please help, guys! I'm really at a loss here.
Alyssa

Didn't see you original post but if it's any help Winipcfg.exe is a perfectly normal original system file in c:\windows
I run Zone Alarm and that file does not try to access the net.

Derek, I think that is her complaint that winipcfg 'is' trying to access the internet. I do not know why it would try to.
Alyssa, Winamp agent is supposed to connect but I do not like it doing so. I have gone into Winamp's options and deselected it from running in order to stop it.

TAskmon is what keeps track of program usage for Defrag, so that things can be sorted for " optimization " so called. It builds and maintains the files in C:\WINDOWS\APPLOG
Have a look in Winamp's options or preferances for anything about checking for updates etc, but winamp agent may be the app that looks up web data bases of info on song tiles/artist etc.
Haven't got winamp any more so can't check it out for sure.

remove winamp from systray, that gets rid of winampa in my experience, i rarely use winamp now, but i do have it on my quicklaunch, at least you can remove it from systray, unlike realplayer ;/

Who are you kidding Woof?
I've seen your name around these parts to know darned well that you would be well capable of getting shot of an RP system tray entry, which is busy using up resources.
Take the "hidden" point though, you sometimes have to go into heavy battle in order to get shot of these things.
I'm still running ancient RP7 Basic (well, it goes!). This sort of thing is an example of why I avoid reformats at all cost. I just don't believe my personal memory would be up to remembering how the heck I cleared all this stuff away.
Derek

if you go to msconfig and remove it from systray, then the next time ypou run a real media file it goes and puts it back in systray, that why i now run real files thru jetaudio, it`s less hassle.
Though if i could use real and not keep having it put in sustray i`d be a lot happier

Had a poke around and this is what I "think" I did:
Brought up RealPlayer then went to
View/Preferences/General/Settings button.
Unchecked "Enable StartCenter".I then made an shortcut to realplay.exe
No idea if this sort of thing works with later versions.
Incidentally I must see if I can stop the darned thing reminding me to update unless I "tell it not to every 30 days". Fortunately this only happens when I go to use it after the 30 days.

Made a bit of headway on the 30 days thing.
Looks like it's stuff in a sub-folder named "msg" in RealPlayer. But if you delete this folder it is put back when you open RealPlayer.Have added this (using deltree) to my general clear-up batch files which I run quite often.
