ok when you removed the drive from the system did you also remove the drivers from the device manager ( right click on the cd-rom in your device manager and select delete )so that when you reinstalled the cd-rom the hardware wizard doesn't find the old drivers and will be forced to install them again from the windows cd ( if that is working ) Also has the game cd's worked before , is it only games or do audio cd's also mess up . then if all else fail's then remove the drive from the system ... reset the cd-rom as a slave ... then install it on the same IDE cable as the hard drive ( assuming that the hard drive is setup as a master ) also remember that the position on the IDE cable is important on some BIOS's as a master \ slave position .so if your hard drive isn't recognised on your reboot then just shut down and recheck your cable position's this will force the cd\rom to use your hard drive drivers which are obviously working .

yes I removed it from the device manager, and all cds that I put in the drive cause the problem, and I have 2 hard drives one master one slave than the CD-ROM is on it's own IDE cable as master (I think that is right) so what can I do ???

If you remove your slave hard drive and make your cd drive the slave then it will force the drivers on to the cd drive that will tell you if it is a problem with the cd drive or with your windows system if it works as a slave to your hard drive then we can rule out any problem with the drive if it still doesen't work then it doesen't necessaraly (?) mean that there is something wrong with the drive but it does seem to point that way ... it could also be a bad cable that connects the cd drive to the motherboard .
