OS: 98 se
CPU/Ram: 1.5 gig/128
Model/Manufacturer: dell/ inspiron
Comment:

need to run 98 due to engine management software that needs more than what a Dos prompt can give in XP. BTW XP was running great, no hardware troubles here.

http://freepctech.com/pc/001/004.shtml

I used this as a guide and never got to the Setup screen. Computer froze.

Also tried to Fdisk, setup default partitions then reboot from cd. Tried 'format c:' + other variations and got "bad command or file name"

Also tried onother setup that the CD gave me options on that was very similar to FDISK, but prettier. Rebooted from CD, Cd tried to format, but had an error 1 second into it.

I am nt a big tech geek so please reply in something I might comprehend :) Thanks in advance

Casey

First of all,What are you trying to do ?
If you are removing XP and trying to install windows 98 in it's place,Then you will Need a Windows 98 Boot disk WITH CD SUPPORT..Next remove XP partition, and then Create a new Dos partition for win 98, after that is done then Format your new drive and then install windows 98 ...

ghostman, I am removing Xp completely and running 98. I have a 98 bootable CD that a friend made for me. I did do everthing you suggest, but when its time to either 'format c:' in DOS, or formatting from the bootable, it freezes or has an eror message respectively.

partition info is as follows

current fixed disk drive 1
partition C:1
Status A
Type PRI DOS
volume label (blank)
Mbytes 19077
System UNKNOWN
Usage 100%

Total disk space is 19077 Mbytes (1Mbyte = 1048576 bytes)

'end of info on that page'

the error that pops up while starting win98 setup from bootable cd when it tries to format is:

ERROR
Setup cannot install Windows 98 on your computer.

An error was detected while formating your primary hard disk partition

Press enter to quit setup

'end of eror message'

The results of fdisk, option 4, in #4 above shows the partition has been created OK but is not formatted. Once formatted, the UNKNOWN under system will show FAT32.

If you're booting from the cd, don't choose to start the 98 installation. Start with cdrom support. At the dos prompt type format c: and enter. When it's done hit ENTER when it asks for a label. Then type setup and enter. That should start the installation.

If using Fdisk be sure the version you have supports disks larger than 64GB. The original Fdisk didn't. Find it here: http://radified.com/Files/

That just means the format command isn't in the current directory or in a path statement. Usually booting from the cd creates a ramdrive at a: and loads the various commands there. I guess your's isn't putting FORMAT there. It may be best to use a regular floppy bootdisk. Or has the problem been solved with ghostman's email?

dosser, tried making the Killdisk with no luck. I was able to download it, but not able to burn to disk as an image. I even used the link/tutorial for using Nero to do this. Nero says its not the correct format. Long story short, I was able to burn the data to cd, but its not a bootable cd.

I also tried burning another win 98SE boot disk cd from data sourced at bootdisk.com This was worse...it wont boot from it. it says 'missing oerating system'

Killdisk isn't bootable by itself, you would add those files to a floppy (or CD) bootdisk

"missing operating system" means the disk wasn't bootable, and the system tried to start from the hard drive

Have you tried a floppy bootdisk or do you have one of those Dell's with no floppy drive?
