Comment:

I just this minute received the PE MAGISTR.DAM virus. I received an e-mail from my niece although the TO: said NONE. The message itself said something about a family get-together which I didn't understand. In the ATTACH: was RMKEYS.exe and I opened it.

DON'T OPEN IT !!!!! The virus is in the attachment RMKEYS.exe I now have 22 infected .exe files. I made a print of the virus scan results and downloaded it to my desktop and I can't even open it using Explorer. Another reason to use an updated virus scanner, which I don't have. Just finished reinstalling Win98 !

your antivirus program that you said you ran should have given you the option to clean, quarantine, or delete files.
If uncleanable then quarentine or delete.
If you quarentine you can probably send it to your antivirus techs, and they will check out the files, often they can send them back cleaned.

Next time, don't panic and do a reinstall so quickly, imho.

Good luck.

No, I meant that I had just reinstalled Win98 no more than a week ago. Yes, I deleted the files but one of them was sfc.exe so now I need to find out how I can extract sfc.exe from my Win98 CD ! Does anyone know where it is hidden ?

what version of win98 do you have? I don't see why I can't email you a copy of mine if it's the right version. Then you wouldn't have to go through the CD junk.
Now I don't know if this would work, this only seems logical to me. Somebody shout if this won't work.
I found my copy in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM

Glad you found it :)

Hope your problems are solved.
Don't forget to scan attachments now, lol.
I had w32/magistr@mm a couple of months ago. Grrrr. What a pain. I now am freakish about scanning everything. pc scan, backround scan while online, macro scan, all email attachments, and vigilant about updating dats.

Good luck
