I have mcafee virus scan 4.0.2 installed in my pc win98se after discovering that I had a free upgrade coming I downloaded the 4.0.3 this totally crashed me.I had to uninstall it and replace it with the original 4.0.2.Even dell has stopped shipping McAfee with their systems and is using norton. Has anyone out there any idea why McVscan 4.0.3 crashed my system, have you had same problem and do you have solutions? Thanks O Plenty

It could relate to a lot of problems. Because Mcafee also loads a TSR under DOS if your autoexec.bat is running, the DOS scaner is technically running in the background. I had to upgrade when mine corrupted, and it gave me vxd errors blah blah blah. What I did was go into safe mode, UNINSTALL it cleanly and then redownload and reinstall...

Don't mess with it I had a similar problem. As far as viruses go this is like getting the flu from getting a flu shot. Could it be this anti-virus is a virus? The only virus so far that I have gotten was from a burned in CD distributed by guess who Microsoft. It is a few years back but a word macro virus got into documentation they were distributing at a convention I attended. I am still gun shy when opening *.doc files case they load a word basic macro that eats files.

Evidently it is the Webscan component of McAfee which is causing the problems. See Docbombay's post at the bottom of this thread:

I had a problem with version 4.03 and win 98.

Have a look at the mcafee support page. In their search type in "freeze".

You will get a page which easily tells you what to add to Autoexec.bat File.

It sounds complicated but I am a novice and by following this step by step guide I fixed the freeze and now it works perfectly!

There is a Service Pak for Ver 4.0.3 on McAfee's FTP site, After installing 4.0.3 on Win98SE pc's systems wouldn't shutdown, Patch fixed the problem.

So which one of the two following solutions fixes the slowing down or freezing up of Win98, caused by VirusScan:

Q - After installing the latest SuperDAT, my system has been very slow!
A - This has been attributed to an older version of Mcscan32.vxd on your system. Download the attached Mcscan32.exe, at the bottom of this post, to your Desktop. Next double-click on Mcscan32.exe and it will extract Mcscan32.vxd to your Desktop (same location as the exe file). Reboot your computer into Safe Mode and copy Mcscan32.vxd into your C:\Windows\System folder and replace the existing file. Now restart your computer.

Does this fix apply to DAT file 4.0.4.4076 for VirusScan 4.10.1998 or only for VirusScan 5?

Then I found the following instructions on another message board for the same problem:

Slow Boot or Lockup After VirusScan Install
If your system is booting really slowly or locking up, use step one. If you system is locking up at the windows login or desktop, use step two.

Step 1: Changing the scan command in Autoexec.bat

Click on the START button and select 'Run' and then type 'SYSEDIT' (Without the quotations) and click 'OK'. When the System Editor window is open, you will see several windows, select the C:\Autoexec.bat window in the front. In the Autoexec window, look for the following line:

c:\progra~1\networ~1\mcafee~1\scan.exe c:\

Change this line to one of the following:

c:\progra~1\networ~1\mcafee~1\scanPM.exe c:\
c:\progra~1\networ~1\mcafee~1\scan86.exe c:\
c:\progra~1\networ~1\mcafee~1\bootscan.exe c:\

Exit Sysedit and Save your changes when prompted. Now you can Restart your computer. Everything should be fixed at this point. If not, try one of the other scan lines listed above.

Step 2: Moving VShield to the Startup Group
Note: This step is not necessary unless you are locking up at the Windows login screen or at the desktop.

[Registry]
Note: You must back up the current Registry files (user.dat & system.dat) before you edit the registry.

Click on the Start button and choose 'Run'
Type: "regedit" (without the quotations)
Click the plus next to 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE'
Click the plus next to 'Software'
Click the plus next to 'Microsoft'
Click the plus next to 'Windows'
Click the plus next to 'Current Version'
Click the folder titled 'Run'
Delete the value 'VSHWIN32EXE'
Delete the value 'VSSTAT.EXE'
Delete the value 'McAfee WebscanX'
Click the folder titled 'Run Services'
Delete the value 'VSHWIN32EXE'
Delete the value 'VSSTAT.EXE'
Delete the value 'McAfee WebscanX'
Close the Registry Editor window

[Setting Files]
Open 'My Computer' on your desktop
Goto C:
Goto Program Files
Goto Network Associates
Goto McAfee VirusScan
Look for DEFAULT.VSH and DEFAULT.VSC
Write protect both of these

[Adding to Startup]
(While still in the Virus Scan directory)
Look for VSHWIN32.EXE
Right click on this file and choose 'Copy'
Close the My Computer window
Right click on the start button and choose 'Explore'
(This should automatically start at the Start Menu folder)

Double Click on 'Programs'
Double Click on 'StartUp'
Hold down the Ctrl (Control) key and press V
This should paste the VSHWIN32 shortcut

Reboot your computer

--------------------------------------------
Which one should I do? I'm confused.
