W98SE disaster after windows update

Using Windows 98SE and Internet Explorer 6.0. Just downloaded and installed latest 'Windows Update' from Microsoft update centre - 'a security patch for Internet Explorer'. After rebooting it asked for product key code. After supplying this, windows started up but immediately gave error message 'explorer has performed an illegal operation'. Then screen goes blank. How do I get out of this?

You could try a registry restore. Boot up with a floppy, and at the DOS prompt, type SCANREG /RESTORE Choose a date prior to the install of the IE security update.
