On a 10Base2 LAN, other computer doesn't show in network neighorhood. "this device is working properly" appears for NICs in device manager on both machines. Client for MS networking, dialup adapter, NIC adapter, IPX/SPX, NetBUEI, TCP/IP, file and printer sharing all installed on both machines. Ping works for local machine 127.0.0.1 and 169.254.?.?. Net Diag fails for both I and N options. Occasionally Net Diag reports diagnostic server found but always times out. Coax is RG58 and ohmmeter shows continuity with no short. Diagnostics from NIC (all NICs have RealTek chips) show no errors for rom check, and network check but fail when attempting to contact other computer. I've tried several NICs all with the same results. This LAN worked under W95! All NICs are PCI. MS KB Q2200586 seems to ID this problem but installation of all the protocols should get around the problem per note at the end of the article.
Has anyone overcome this problem? Has anyone actually gotten a W98SE EhterNet LAN to work? TIA Joe

try going to start and Find Computer and find the other computers .also try logging on to your computer in you dont log on it wont let you use network neighborhood properly you can "Find" the other computer
but not look open network neighborhood and find them

Things don't always have to show up in network neighborhood for a variety of reasons.
Let's eliminate some variables.
let's first establish connectivity.remove all protocols (reboot) except netbeui.
Netbeui is on both computers.Make sure file and print sharing is on both computers. (reboot)
make sure client for ms-networks is installed on both (reboot)
SHARE a directory - if you don't ahve anything actually shared - one computer may not show up. so share the c drive on both computers (reboot)
now in one computer, type in the computer name and share of the OTHER computer at a command prompt:
\\computer2\cLet me know if this works.
Then.... start adding your protocols.
Do not forget that similarly - with 10baseT to connect TWO computers to each other WITHOUT a hub, you have to CROSS the wires (with a cross over cable or such)
To connect two computers to each other WITH A HUB - you need straight (non-crossed) wires to the hub.
Make sure you follow the same concept for your 10base2.
