I have a brand new system...Asus mother, AMD 400, 128mb sdram in 2 Dimms. Anyway, I continue to get a message that reads " Fatal exception OE has occurred at 0028:c0005338 in VXD VMM(01)+00004338....then sometimes after that I get a box that appears and says W95INF32.DLL/ThunkConnect32 Failure. ????????????????????????????????????????????
I am lost on this...I have deleted the partitions..reformatted drive, re-installed WIN 98...no help...I am lost for answers. Any Ideas out there?

howdy, Try removing when of your sticks of memory and see if the problem goes away. You might have a Bad DIMM.

Laters,

Kevin The Tech Dude.

P.S. Since this is a ASUS M/B go into the BIOS and disable the anti-virus thing that is called, I think chip away something like that, I have a ASUS board and I can't remember than name, shame on me. Anyways, turn it off.

This is really starting to bug me and I mean alot! I'll be in the middle of downloading something, playing a game, using the internet or simply clicking start and up comes this blue screen! I get these damn VMM errors very often too, mainly only when Im on the net.
There are 4 possible events that happen next:
1. Blue Screen appears saying VMM error, and system just freezes.
2. Computer just reboots without warning
3. Computer goes to "Now safe to shut off your computer" orange screen IMMEDIATELY.
4. A continual blue screen appears saying VMM error, even after about 100 presses to the Press any key option...

If more than 2 people get the SAME EXCEPTION FAULT at THE SAME ADDRESS, then obviously this means that Windows 95 is AT FAULT - goddamn Microsoft saying it's our RAM on their homepage if we get these errors (their too afraid to admit!)
We MUST BOYCOTT Microsoft!!!!! THEY are causing ALL OUR Problems

MICROSOFT WAS RIGHT!!!
Ok look guys, there are 2 reasons the shit is happening to you! Firstly, you might have two brands of RAM in the machine, with two different timings, (whatever) i.e. 2 slots of 40ns and two slots of 60ns. (My case), this is causing a conflict cause the RAM chips are having problems with each other, another thing is that DIMM/SIMM is just messed up a bit. So for all you guys with two brands of RAM in there, get rid of the shitty brand, for the rest of you, just don't use that slot/chip anymore!
Peace out!

I've been getting the same fatal exception error. I've got a AMD K6-2 450 on a Gainward board running Windows 98 and it turns out I had one of the jumpers set up
incorrectly. The motherboard documentation and even on the processor states the voltage is 3.3v/2.2v. In the box the processor came in, there
was a slip of paper with a different voltage of 3.3v/2.4v. The different voltage made the jumper setting different. I changed the jumper and the
error went away. This may not be causing your problem, but it's worth a shot.

I would get to the point where windows was loading the drivers and starting to display the desktop and I would get the error.

Hope this helps.

You know, there's a pattern here. I just build a new PC and get the same 0028:C0005338 error. Guess what processor I'm using? Yes, an AMD K6-2 450. Seems like everyone having this problem has an AMD chip. And, I only have 1 DIMM (Micron 100MHz 64MB SDRAM). So for those who think it's an incompatible RAM problem, I think not. I, too, have tried reformatting, repartioning, re-installing. I'm tempted to try Windows 95, just for kicks. If anyone figures this out definitively, please e-mail me.

"Fatal Exception 0E at 0028:c0005338 in VXD VMM(01)+00004338" - I have not had this or any other fatal error messages since I set my VA503+ mobo processor voltage regulator to 2.4 volts (which is the correct figure for the 450 chip. I had mistakenly set it to 2.2volts which is the correct setting for the 400 chip. All you guys having this type of error please check as I did. I was convinced I had set it correctly from day one of the system build (over 2 weeks ago).

Hope this helps

Ya' know I get the same damn error..but it's strange...I put in an upgraded processor..an AMD 233 with MMX and 3D now...also added a new graphics card voodoo 3 with 16meg (PCI) AND also added some new RAM...the machine worked fine for about 3 months..then all the sudden i start getting the VXD VMM error blue screen of death!..I naturally tried reformatting and reinstalling windows...but get the same error...then I thought..well didn't get the error until I turned the heat on in the house (it's winter here)..pulled the case put a large fan on it and well it worked...the machine ran for about 6 hours then bam got the blue screen again...turned it off and let it set overnite...and again it ran for about 6 hours before the blue screen came up...coincidence? or is the AMD overheating? maybe..but could also be the RAM thing..are maybe a combo of both. I will remove one of RAM chips to see what effect it will have...if none..my guess is that it's a heat problem.

I get the same error as the original message "W95INF32.DLL/ThunkConnect32". But I think Responses 21, 23 & 24 have the answer dead on. It's THE HEAT. If you turn off your computer and let it cool down (Or open a window, etc) you'll probably notice a decrease. Basically the CPU manufacturer riped you off by boosting their performance too fast (increasing chip cycles to the brink for the particular chip). Experiment & let us know if this is true for all. I'll check back. P.S. any underclocking tips, fan alternative???

underclocking does seem to help the issue. either by setting the jumpers on the motherboard or in bios or both. but it seem to fix the issue that has plagued our processors (k6-2 450mhz). 450 is jus pushing it too much. we got ripped off.

After many reformats and installs I found that my video card must be bad. I replaced my video card with another. The PC ran just fine after that. I also found that my fan on the video board had small crack and was very noisy. This may have caused it to cool incorrectly. If you have another video card that you can get your hands on you may want to try it out.

Hope this helps someone!

I have .....at 0028:C0001409B in VXD VMM(01) + 000013098

system is AMD III 450, 128M.

I found that the problem was centred around my Matrox G400 card (i.e. no problem until I installed the matrox drivers..then bang blue screen on shut down). I applied all the latest drivers I could find including the W98 SE shutdown patch. No use

What appears to have solved the problem was downloading the latest AGP driver for the VIA chipset that my motherboard is based on. There is a link from the FAQ page of the Matrox G400 site (FAQs on Video problems)

Follow up to Messege 36:

In regards to messege 21 + 23, the problem might be that the AMD chip seems to overheat to easily. I was getting this error every five minutes or so after booting. And it was always while I was doing something different. Well, I underclocked my AMD 400 to 350, changed the bus speed to 66 from 100, and so far it's been going 45 mins without a crash. Since I'm at work, I will leave it running over the weekend doing some cpu intensive work, and see if I'm greeted by a blue screen on Monday.

If you don't want to underclock your cpu, you might be able to achieve the similar results by using a software based cpu cooler. Two off the top of my head are CPUidle and Rain.

I fix the problem by increasing the voltage. the cpu fan was not cutting it, i bought one of the refrigerated cooling fan for $30 at a computer show. working with rain/waterfall i get no crashes. bumped my k6-2 450mhz to 525mhz-533mhz with a stablity rating of 8.5. (curently running at 500mh for rock solid atability) it has been overclocked for about two months with NO problems. the fix, increase the voltage up to 2.6v and even 2.8v (to achieve a stable performance at 525mhz to 533mhz range.) i think the default core voltage fo MY SPECIFIC K6-2 is 2.2V.

EVERYBODY CHECK YOUR RAM!!!

I was having these exact same problems (as I wrote in a previous followup. Everybody kept saying it could be the ram...so i checked it. I have 4 strips of 16mgs, totalling 64 MGs. I pulled them out and looked at them, 2 strips we EDO, and 2 strips were nonEDO. I put JUST the EDO back in, and everything worked fine. Then I took the EDO out and put JUST the nonEDO in, and IT worked fine. They just wouldnt work together. Of course, now I only have 32 mgs in my computer now, but at least I'm not getting any errors.....for now. But, I guess its because they were messing each other up, and slowing down, but the 32 megs doesn't seem THAT much slower than when I had the 64 megs. I hope this helps some of ya'll

Well I figured out how to solve the 0028 :C0005338 VXD VMM (01) + 00004338 error.
I have an AMD K6-2 550 (third machine not used much) that was giving me the above error. I have concluded that to eliminate the error you can only have the video card, hard drive, maybe a sound card, and memory in the machine. Start adding extra boards and ka-boom, the error.

The machine I was working on with VXD VMM(01) errors all the time had a AMD-475 mhz, Spacewalker HOT-591 motherboard, Diamond Monster Fusion video card, SoundBlaster Live 128 sound card, and 1 128MB DIMM.

This is what I did to solve the VXD VMM errors on this machine:

I downloaded all the newest drivers. No luck. I did a clean install(multiple times). No luck. I replaced the RAM. No luck. I replaced the video card. No luck. I then swapped everything out and determined it was the motherboard/processor was causing the trouble.

The original voltage was 2.4V. I tried lowering the voltage. No luck, windows wouldn't even boot. I then boosted the voltage to 2.5V and there was a dramatic change in that there was much fewer VXD VMM errors. I was scared of boosting the voltage any farther, so I underclocked the processor by changing the multiplier to 4.5, making it run at 450mhz.

Success! No longer am I getting any more VXD VMM(01) errors.

That worked for me, but I think you could boost the voltage to 2.6 and eliminate the error and not underclock. But I am thinking the processor was never meant to run at 475, and besides it works now and I don't want to mess with it anymore.

Those VXD VMM errors are hell!!!

It seems to me that all these VXD VMM errors have to do with voltage on the processor, not Microsoft, not RAM, not the video card. Lots of people with AMD chips have it, so I think it this problem arises with Advanced Micro Devices.

Hope this helps.

I too run an AMD 450 on an Acer AX59Pro. I get the same VXD errors. I hear that the AMD 450 is actually a 475 that was geared down because of errors in the first 475's released. The problem must lie with the chip due to all the different types of boards that I read on this message board that people use. I ran this processor for 1 year with no trouble. I reinstalled Windows 98 SE and it gave me VXD errors during install. I did it all to fix this problem with not much luck. So I think the life span on these 450's isn't very long.

Problem solved.

At least for one situation. If you have an AMD K6 chip and a Riva TNT graphics card from Ndriva and having the VMM problem, try this FIRST (before ya bust something worse)... Get the detonator driver for the video card. There may even be later drivers. Ignore em. Get the detonator. You will see better video performance from your video card with the added bonus that the BSOD that give your errs of VMM(01) and VMM(0F) *MAY* (it still may be some other problem in your case... your milage may vary) disappear. I got this err every 5-30 minutes, particularly when connected to the net it seems. No more BSOD after this driver was loaded on my system. Not RAM, not voltage but video card driver was the problem. It's also the cheapest solution I've found yet.. the driver is free... check out:

http://www.nvidia.com/Marketing/Developer/OpenDrvDwn.nsf/4938fcf0bd98786a882565fb006924e7?OpenView&Start=1&Count=30&Expand=4#4

If you do a search on the net, you'll see this is a known prob w/ the AMD CPU and Riva TNT cards. Remember too to select the right driver... know if you have PCI or AGP video card before you select which one to install!

As always, something could go wrong that could blow up your machine (such as installing the driver and getting the BSOD and corrupting Windows) ... so I am not responsible for the driver or any of this info, but trying to help you guys out. So take this info at your own risk -- there is always a risk -- even turning on your machine. If the link above is dead, do a search on the net for the word 'detonator' and 'tnt' ... you should be able to find it. If it works, drop an email by... I'd like to forward them to AMD and Riva to let them know how many ppl had problems with the drivers that came with the video cards.

But I will try the ram , & voltage settings

Matrox G400 16MB

I've tried all you sugested, and little did it help.
Then I tried it once more and look and behold
everything was just peachy.
So now I was left with another question:
"How the F*** did that happen?"

I've come to this conclusion....
It's the order in which you do it.
The last time I did it this way:
·Flashed my bios on Mother Board and Graphic Card.
·Formatted drive.
·Xcopied win98 to harddrive
·Installed win98 from harddrive
·Installed Hardware Monitoring
·Installed VIA 4-IN-1 Driver (Ver 4.20)
IDE Busmaster Driver
VIA AGP Driver
IRQ Routing Driver
VIA ACPI Registry Driver
·Installed VIA AGP Driver AGP4.02 (update)
·Installed SoundBlaster
·Installed Accton EN1207D-TX/WOL 10/100
·Ghosted
·Installed newest driver for G400

That did it!

Some of the things above should not be ecential to the succesful installation but I've listed it anyway.

I've tried all theese things before without succes, but in this order it seems to work. And not just once, I've repeated it on 25 identical machines and one simmilar.

I hope this will inspire some testing among you guys.

Good luck!

I got the same error with an ATi XPert 98 card and the new TNT2 chipset.

I dunno about voltage, but my machine runs with the cover off okay, and if I lie it on it's side(???) with the cover off it always works.

Gonna install some new fans as I think it's heat...

Does anybody get the problem of the machine not even starting, eg no post from the BIOS? On it's side my machines okay.

PS If the voltage is a factor, there is more impedance and ultimatly less current at higher temps. THis may answer the voltage and temp issues.

Anyone add anything to my views?? Please contact me.

Don't blame AMD for this, it is microsofts buggy crap that is to blame. The 400 amds will crash because of a timing problem as you boot in win95. Everybody try going to 2.1v because it cools down the processor. (why is it that DOS, LINUX,BEOS,OS/2, and just about every other app and os on the planet is stable with this platform???)

I'm going to try : another DIMM (100 mhz),

I am having the same error, and was trying to fix it when i found this board. I unfortunately changed a motherboard, case, and video all at the same time, so it made it tough. It is sounding more and more like it is a power issue.

My problem started when I changed the video card. Luckily I did that just before I swapped the board. Since then, it has run bad. I even can overclock the system in 2000. System temp is under 80 degrees F. and so is chip temp (I love peltiers). My ram ran fine before. Some one said earlier that the system ran fine when they took out all the hardware accessories.. I would think that is a power issue. The power supply may or may not be strong enough, but I think what it is actually happening is that the CPU is starving for juice by the time the MOBO powers all the accessories. Raising the voltage could maybe compensate.

I think 2000 has a better tolerance for memory glitches. It’s true that incompatible memory can cause this stuff, but bad voltage can cause memory, video, and all sorts of problems.

My suggestion to all, is drop to standard clock sped, or less, try changing the voltage(with decent cooling you can usually go up to 2.9 safely, with great cooling, my brother was at 3.3, but damaged the onboard cache after a hot day and 4 months of use. However it still runs), and see how it goes. I’ll try this tonight and see how it works.

By the way, I am running win 2000, win 98 developers copy and win98SE. 2000 is all that will run. So the real blame lies in MS and the board makers, not AMD. I’m using a Tyan 1598s 2meg cache, with an AMD 400 running at 450, along with an ATI all in wonder 128.. (I think the all in wonder causes the power drain). My hardware would make your head spin.. Too much, all on a 250 watt P/S (but that’s another story).

Let me know if anyone this works for anyone.

Heres some pics I posted for a friend regarding my system.. its actually been simplified a bit, and changed some since this was done.

Well that didn't work.. By the way, if you run a peltier cooling fan.. Check for corrosion frequently, I fried my AMD 400. Dead Short due to corrosion, caused by... condensation (I wondered why my problems got worse the longer it ran). Oh well, I picked up a 500, still same problem, I also changed to a MUCH better power supply, still no luck. I had this problem a year or so ago, but I cannot remember how I fixed it. May have to call out the hounds.

Hello there,
hi,

do have the same probs under Win98SE with
the VMM 0x0e something exception

Config:
Mainboard: DFI K6BV3+/66
CPU: AMD K6 II 533
Graphics: MGA400
RAM: Single 128 MB DIMM 100Mhz

However under WinNT 4.0 SP6 I donīt get any errors at all. My conclusion is that it is not a memory nor a heat or power supply problem. I suggest a possible timing problem
wich is AMD/Win9x specific. Having read multiple newsgroups I further found out, that
certain graphic adapters (like Matrox and ELSA) in combination with a AMD CPU greater 400 Mhz affect the stability of the Win9x system.

Well all... I have to join you on the AMD problem.

I get the VMM(01) error, same address dump, etc.. with the blue screen. Typically though, it will recover if I hit OK. It may come back 5 - 10 times after..but... well you all know. I did apply two changes that I had found suggested (and my fingers are crossed) which consisted of going into the BIOS and DISABLING the EXTERNAL CACHE. Another suggestion was to increase the GRAPHICS APERTURE to 256..which I did. So far so good.

HOWEVER, I still have an ADDITIONAL problem that I was wondering if anyone else has also. My setup is:

GA-5AX(REV 4)ALI Aladdin V AGPSet motherboard
AMD K6-2 475Mhz CPU
64Mb of PC-100 RAM
Voodoo 3 3000 AGP Video Card
Windows 98 Version 1

My additional problem is this.. I cannot run Rogue Spear, Half-Life or any Quake, QuakeII based game. Unreal, Klingon Academy (excellent game), Wheel of Time, etc.. all work fine. Now, I had the same hardware setup in Windows 95 several months ago..and these games worked fine. I switched to Win98 to get away from the various problems with AMD and Win95 (the timing problem). Ever since then those games DO NOT WORK anymore. They install fine, they configure fine, but if you RUN the game itself..BAM!! locks up(the screen goes WHITE) like a constrictor. By the way, I just re-partitioned/re-format/re-installed Win98 2 days ago. Didn't fix that problem or the VMM error..that's why I started searching and found this place.

Is anybody with the VMM(01) error experiencing game lockups with the games I mentioned? I would really like to know.

thanks,

Roger

As the lamers say in the newsgroups: "ADD ME TOO!" I also have the same error, same string, same processor AMD K6-2 450, and have tried most of the above-mentioned solutions that were applicable to my situation. (New Win98 SE install, so there are no conflicting programs, etc). I have noticed that the heat seems to be the main issue with this chip, as we live in the South, our house gets extremely warm during the day (even with AC running, still 86 inside), and last night, the errors became almost non-existent. I am going to try installing RAIN or Waterfall cpu cooling program to see if that resolves the issue. In the meantime, if anyone comes up with THE solution, please let us ALL know! Thanks for all the tips, tricks, and especially for letting me know that it's NOT JUST MY SYSTEM!

I logged loads of BSOD Exception errors in IFSMGR, VMM, IOS. I tried almost everything including hundreds of rebuilds in different orders, different drivers, etc etc etc, and then I came across this forum.

I would like to say a big thank you to STEVE, JOHN NEWCOMBE, and everyone else that suggested cranking up the voltage to 2.4V.
It fixed it for me on all 4 pc's without any loss of performance !!

Ok here goes nothing. Here's what I've tried thus far. I have a Tyan 1598 (socket 7) mainboard. I am using a AMD 550MHz processor. There is 64 Megs of RAM in the computer and 1 Meg internal cache. I have been working on this computer for almost a month learning various suprises can happen when building. Here's what i've found to work so far. Try going into the System BIOS (usually pressing 'del' during the memory countup). Somewhere there will be something that can turn off the INTERNAL CACHE (it might be CPU internal cache). Disable it. Your computer will slow down A LOT, but any VMM errors should disappear. If you do this get a lot more RAM so your system will speed up. Best advice is to switch main boards...there is a problem why your files are caching internally wrong. Which is the cause for Blue Screen. Disabling the internal cache uses the actual memory which will drastically kill system preformance, but it will work. Try trading your mainboard for a new one where the internal cache isn't malfunctioning. That's my advice so far. Need any other help feel free to email me, i'll try as best as i can to help you out.

OK all you AMD guys out there. Was getting the same error, as I posted earlier. Did a lot of serching, called TC Computers wherer I got the board, talked to Sierra tech support... they are VERY good. Talked to my ISP, GTE (Verizon). It relates to the virtual memory... i.e. hard drive. Told me to run scan disk (full) to find any bad sectors. Had me reset my Virtual memory to 0 minimum and 0 maximum then reboot at set it to 160 on the minimum and unlimited maximum after reboot. Problem still persisted. Changed the CPU voltage in .5 volt increments from the recommended 1.6 volts to 1.75 BIOS kept erroring on startup so I told it to quit monitoring. No help...there either. Then, for the fifteen millionth time I decided to go back to the VIA web site and download the VIA drivers yet again. Well guess what... They updated the version of 4 in 1 from 4.23 to 4.24. I mean I had been on there everyday downloading the same set of flaky drivers. Loaded the new drivers and the problem is now gone! I'm convinced it was the IDE driver that was doing it. The old version just wouldn't install properly. I would hang after installing or I would get double entries in the devide manager etc. Oh, and the graphics aperture size change to 256 that some have suggested did nothing for me either. BTW I have an ASUS A7V MB with the VIA chipset and an AMD Duron 700 processor. Hey if you have an VIA chipset, you need to update these drivers.

THANKS....IT WORKED....
I purchased a MB from a local comp store where they gave me a pretty good deal on a chip, MB, and memory. They offered to set the jumpers for me and everything! What I didn't know was that the board was only designed to carry a K6-2 400 but the chip was a K6-2 500. I guess they fooled with the settings until something worked on their test bench. Since the system kept coming up with the same error, I read all of the responses here. It WASN'T the memory or the video card or Windows either. I changed the voltage from 2.2 volts which the book recommended for a 400 Mhz chip to 2.4 volts. It started working immediately, I haven't seen it since. I must mention that I inspected the chip fan as well to make sure there will be no overheating problems later. Thanks again and I hope this solves your problems as well! # :-)

On the network, there are 37 other computers, all with AMD 400-550 K6-2's with ZERO VMM errors. Problems seems to have started about 2 weeks ago, just after I installed Broadband DSL on the network. Thought it was WinFaxPro 9.0 (which also caused a one-time V-FAT (01) error) which made no sense after 2 years running with no problems at all. I F-DISKED the HDD and re-installed everything, system ran great for 5 days and now Blue Screen Of Death strikes back.

I am doomed as a freelance PC guy, this is the only error to which my client frowns upon my skills because I cannot seem to fix it. The system is running 256 PC100 RAM and 8 MB Diamond Speedstar video in a massive server CasEDGE server case with 4 fans. The CPU fan is average size with heatsink. Is it heat related? This seems idiotic to me, however I've seen solutions more idiotic than that work, so perhaps I'm the idiot who's really confused. By why, in the same office, on the same network, don't any other AMD-Based workstation crash with the Screen of Certain Doom, the now infamous VMM hellhound error code?

Please, anyone, I beseech you! I am in Hell! I will be forced into early unemployment because of one stupid little catch-all error meesage that refuses to go away! Some network admin, eh? Would you hire me? Can't fix such a tiny little error message!

Any advice before I go panhandle in the soup-line?

I have a FIC VA-503+ v1.2 motherboard, AMD K6-2 450, and 256 of ram (128x2)

I -used- to have the problems. Here's how I solved it.

1. Ensure the ram you have, is up to snuff for the bus speed you have it set to. If you have PC100 Ram in there, don't automatically assume that the RAM is totally good.
2. Next, ENSURE!!! that the ram timing is the same as the bus speed. The FIC VA-503 board allows for different speeds. Having them different causes issues at the higher speeds.
3. If you are running win95 with an amd k6 350+, go to http://www.amd.com/products/cpg/k623d/win95_update_k6.html and get the patch.
4. Also, check out http://www.microsoft.com/technet/ and do a search or two.
5. Any of the "soundpro" built in soundcards on motherboards (based on the CM8330 chipset). Buy a soundcard and disable that.
6. If you haven't installed the miniport drivers, do it now...
7. Also, some cards don't like to share their irq lines. Look up the IRQ sharing map for your motherboard (it'll be in the manual) And if possible, make it that -nothing- shares its irq with the video card.

I have a plethora of other suggestions. e-mail me if you have a specific question.

Sent an e-mail not long ago for my vxd problem. Been working on this continuing problem for over 4 months - Found the fix. Got it from your other site 'vxd fix' message from other posts. Upped my AMDK6/2/500 processor voltage from the standard 2.2v to 2.3v and voila! Just because I've done it so many times already, reformatted drive and installed win98 and added all the updates. Not one problem. Not a single error. Awesome. ...To whoever put up the original post for the fix?...(Scott?)Thanx! (Worked for me!)
