wife was using internet, all of a sudden computer crashed. Restarted machine, and noticed several .vxd files were missing. I suspected a virus but had no luck! Could it be a problem with Win98?

Although I'm unsure of the cause, I solved the problem by copying filesec.vxd BACK into my windows/system directory...

Vxd's are always dissappearing. Did you get messages at startup saying 'a file refered to *****cannot be found'? My best advice is to either copy files from your installation CD rom (Use an extractor program such as winzip) or search for references to the files in your system startup files/Registry, and Rem them out. Reboot and cross your fingers. Often you won't need the files anyway, the references may be left over from an old installation.

Hi everybody!

The files32.vxd isn't a windows file. It's a Pretty worm virus file. To stop the messages that ask it, look the instructions on

Your windows will work again.

You don't need FILES32.VXD! It was created by the virus. You do need to edit your Registry however, to eliminate the reference to it. See the following link for instructions: http://www.symantec.se/region/uk/avcenter/venc/prettypark_worm.html

Reply:

If you are unable to launch program files because you have already deleted Files32.vxd:
You will need to follow these steps to edit the registry:
1. Click the Start button, point to Programs, then choose MS-DOS Prompt.
2. In the DOS window, type CD \Windows and press Enter.
3. Type COPY REGEDIT.exe REGEDIT.SCR and press Enter.
4. Type EXIT and press Enter. This will close the DOS window.
5. Click the Start button, point to Find, then choose Files or Folders. Search for REGEDIT.SCR, and double-click on it to launch the program.
6. Go to Step 1 in the previous section, How to remove PrettyPark manually.
7. After PrettyPark has been successfully removed, you can delete REGEDIT.SCR.

NOTE: The reason for using this procedure is that .scr is an executable file that runs in a different manner than .exe files. In some cases, due to a previously established file association, you will receive an error message when you perform step 5. In this situation, repeat steps 1 to 7, but in step 3, type:
COPY REGEDIT.exe REGEDIT.COM and in step 5, find the file REGEDIT.COM.
8.

For the last time already!!!

Files32.vxd is a file created by the PrettyPark program, that's why everybody up in the messages says Norton or McAfee deleted it or they were attacked by the virus. Read some of the other messages to get links to the guide that tells you how to remove the registry reference...until then, get used to DOS...honest, you people need to learn DOS, you see that little c:\> and you panic about Windows' pretty little GUI not coming up. Again, Files32.vxd (which is OBVIOUSLY a suspicious file due to the name) is a virus.

Okay...everyone listen up! I'm about to solve your problem easily and you will not even have to mess with the dreaded DOS! If you think you need the files32vxd....YOU DON'T. It's a bogus file created by the pretty park virus. All you have to do is go to www.getvirushelp.com From there you can download a patch to restore your regestry. All you have to do is download it and save it to a floppy disk. Go to your start command and type A: Then click on the ppark.fix.reg This will do everything for you! It's very simple.

Hello,
My name is Mani. Yesterday, I had the problem which you all have. I had searched for the solution and I have got it!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When you attempt to start a program that has a .exe file extension, the program may not start, and you may receive one of the following error messages:
Windows cannot find FILES32.VXD. This program is needed for opening files of type "Application".
Path to program is not a valid Windows NT application
Your desktop may appear to be blank. Also, the problem appears many times on reboot. Even after an anti-virus program has indicated it has cleaned the virus, the registry entry listed later in this article is still in the registry.
CAUSE
This issue may be caused by the Pretty Park virus. The Pretty Park virus creates the Files32.vxd file, and then copies the Files32.vxd file to the Windows\System folder of your computer. Also, the Pretty Park virus modifies a registry key that causes the Files32.vxd file to run when you attempt to run any program that has a .exe file extension.
RESOLUTION
WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT or Windows 2000, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

To resolve this issue, perform the following steps:

NOTE: When you run the Regedit.exe file, you may experience the symptoms described earlier in this article. To work around this issue, rename the Regedit.exe file to Regedit.com, and then follow the instructions listed later in this article. After you are finished, rename the Regedit.com file back to Regedit.exe.
Use Registry Editor to view and then modify the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\Exefile\Shell\Open\Command
Double-click the following registry string value:

In Windows NT:

: REG_SZ: "files32.vxd" "%1" %*
In Windows 95/98:
(Default)"files32.vxd" "%1" %*
In the String box, remove Files32.vxd from the string. The correct string for this value is:

"%1"%*
Note that HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Exefile\Shell\Open\Command may also contact the same string value and must also be modified to remove Files32.vxd from the string.

Click OK, and then quit Registry Editor.

Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.

In the Named box, type files32.vxd, and then click Find Now

In the Name box, right-click the Files32.vxd file, and then click Delete.

NOTE: The Files32.vxd file is not a Windows file and does not reside on the Windows media.

IAIKEYB.VXD missing file:
If you are missing this file and you have or had an Interact 3DFX Hammerhead controller then you need to download the new patch for this controller at www.interact-acc.com. Even if you do not use this controller anymore you will need to install the new program and then remove the program to stop the error with IAIKEYB file.

Hey dude, the files32.vxd is a virus file.
The problem is that the virus has made that file required to run any file with the extension .exe. To fix it, make a copy of regedit.exe and name it regedit.com. Run regedit.com, look for files32.vxd in your registry, and delete all references to this file. There should be one under the some exe directory in the registry. You can verify this fact by going to "my computer". In the menu bar click on View and select options. Click on file types, and go down to executable. You will see that files32.vxd in the run area of executable. It should not be there and the only way to get rid of it is through the registry. Good luck.
