One or two maybe, but so many calls for an over the top reinstall of Windows at a minimum. You may even have to resort to format c: solution in order to correct your situation.

Hi y'all

bang
Try extracting the vmm32.vxd file, TO your system folder, from your Windows CD...using SFC from start/run....

Also Scan for altered files...( Goes IN your VMM32 folder, located in the System folder )

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32\CONFIGMG.VXD
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32\IFSMGR.VXD
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32\IOS.VXD
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32\MRCI2.VXD
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32\NTKERN.VXD
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32\QEMMFIX.VXD
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32\VCOMM.VXD
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32\VDD.001
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32\VDD.002
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32\VDD.VXD
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32\VDMAD.VXD
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32\VFLATD.001
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32\VFLATD.002
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32\VFLATD.VXD
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32\VMOUSE.VXD

Hi Bang, Melee5, Beansoup, hello everyone,

I do not recommend that you extract vmm32.vxd from the Win98 CD. The one on the CD is a skeleton file that is built upon during Win98 setup. Doing such will result in many missing .vxd files on startup.

Wait a second... That's exactly what your problem is. :-)

It certainly does appear that while you were attempting to install the USB drivers vmm32.vxd was somehow deleted or corrupted. The list of files you provided above are normally part of vmm32.vxd.

Your best bet would to reinstall Windows over the top of itself as suggested by Melee5.

Best Regards,
Mesich

....well this is my problem. That computer was given to me from a friend and I didn't get any disks with it. So I'm guessing I would have to reinstall windows like i would on a home made computer where you need to install each device seperately? (i know im pretty screwed now)

Lastly, I had a secondary drive on that computer which had a lot of files that i wish to keep. Can that drive be put on another computer with win98 easily?

Hi Bang, Melee5, Beansoup, hello everyone,

Yes you can put the other hard drive in another computer. How to set it up depends on how the other computers IDE devices are set up.
Take the cover off of the other computer and see if the hard drive is on a ribbon cable by itself or another device is connected to the same cable.
If two devices are already on that cable let us know what is on the second ribbon cable if it exist.

Now for the problem with no Win98 disks.

It is very possible that the .cab files are on the hard drive.

Check for a directory in C: named Win98. If it is there look for the .cab files there.

Also look in C:\Windows\Options\Cabs

Let us know what you find.

Best Regards,
Mesich

i found that windows/options/cabs folder, but I dont know if the files in there are the ones I needed ( i dont know exactly what the cab files are). I also found that I do have the main VXD file.

ALSO I found out my "MISSING" files are in a directory that does not exist. It looks in C:/windows/VMM32/*.* and the VMM32 folder is not even in the windows directory.

Hi y'all

bang
The VMM32 folder is in C:\windows\system..
Check if you have that folder...and post back what is in it...
Cab files are compressed files...They get decompressed on installation..

Hi y'all

Mesich,
Info in the VMM32.vxd
On the disk ( Cab.48 ), it is 475084.
Upon installation, it is 931764, and remains the same size...

So your right..Don't extract it...

Hi Bang, Melee5, Beansoup, hello everyone,

From C:\Windows\Options\Cabs\>type setup.
This should launch the Windows Setup if the directory contains the .cabs.

Beansoup,
Yes, it will be very different before and after the install.

Best Regards,
Mesich
