i had the same problem a while back and its the registry thats looking for it. if you feel comfortable going into the registry to make changes then click on start - run and type in regedit. when it opens click edit - find and type in the file name. it will search the registry for that file when you find it, delete it, close the registry and reboot. BE WARNED IF YOU MESS UP THE REGISTRY THAT YOU MAY KILL THE PC ENTIRLY SO MAKE A BACKUP FIRST.

You should e able to find it at
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\VSDATA95]

Right Click on the folder named VSDATA95 and select delete. I did so a few weeks ago after exporting the key and have had no problems.

There wre a total of 178 registry keys I manually removed after uninstalling ZA. Most of them were file extensions of the Mailsafe functions.

Besides all of the extensions I also had to remove the following major sets of keys left behind:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Zone Labs]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ZAMailSafe]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Zone Labs]

Chris, Did you see my posts?

There are virtually no traces of ZA on my PC.

I have since installed Tiny Personal Firewall and am quite pleased with it. There was a learning curve but only because I was so used to using ZA for 3 years.

When I first installed Tiny I had questions:
http://computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/127772.html that got a good response.

It appears that Tiny is going beyond free so it I would recommend getting it soon. Most links are now dead but the following still has it:

If you were still getting the missing file error, it is most likely here.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SharedDLLs

In the right window, delete c:\windows\System\vsdata95.vxd

If you are going to uninstall again, use these instructions.

Yes, I suspect you will get the missing file maessage.

WhitPhil's link does provide for the correct and complete uninstall guide for ZA if you decide to choose that path. After reading from that link I found that I had not deleted the C:\Windows\Internet Logs folder that contained ~9mb of files. (gone now :)

Following the uninstall instructions will get most of the items.

I listed the items that the uninstaller misses. Removing them manually is a good thing after it is done. In doing so, the missing vxd message disappears too.

If you are now happy with the installed version then you should stick with it.
