I read through the forum on this error but I think I have a different situation.
While initializing device VSDATA95:
Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer.I couldn't figure it out but through a Google search discovered it was related to ZoneAlarm firewall.
I installed ZoneAlarm about 2 weeks ago and now whenever I hard boot my computer I get this error.
I couldn't get my computer to boot normally so I booted into Windows 95 Startup Menu and selected number 3: Safe Mode. I then searched my computer for "vsdata95" and found "vsdata95.vxd". I promptly copied this file to a floppy and then deleted it from my C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder.
I don't have any problems booting now, except that I have to boot the computer, copy the file back to the \SYSTEM folder, and then soft reboot (CTRL + Shift). If I soft reboot every time I don't have any problems and vsdata95 works fine. The file has to be copied back to the \SYSTEM folder or the ZA firewall will not work.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? It is ZoneAlarm version 3.1.395 with TrueVector.

I made a small error above: I meant to say a soft reboot is holding down Shift while selecting Restart from the Start> Shutdown menu, not CTRL + Shift as I said.

That's an interesting way to start your computer. Have you tried booting without loading ZA?
You can prevent ZA from starting by using the MSConfig utility and deselecting the references to Zone Alarm. Once booted, try starting ZA manually.
An even better solution might be to try another less resource hungry firewall.

For everyone’s information zonealarm doesn't have to running as part of startup. Deselect like Rimfire said in his posting. Keep truevector selected. It will still protect your computer. It will not let you know that any new programs need internet access. It will just deny access to any programs that hasn’t been given access permission before. I open up zonealarm manually whenever I have a new program that need internet access permission; otherwise it doesn't have to be running.

(Follow-up)
It seems that the 7.1.394 client is outdated and doesn't work anymore with 95.
I installed build 7.1.405 today and no problems.
