I don't know what kind of file that is, but it has been my experience that those kind of messages come up when I delete a program folder instead of properly Uninstalling it, and so either Win.ini or System.ini are still looking for the deleted file. You could try editing those .ini files and deleting all references of that file, but I suggest backing up those .ini files before you do so.

vredir.vxd is "32-bit client for Microsoft Networks." The only reason I know this is because I am trying to reinstall that client on my system - so far unsuccessfully.

This file is part of Client for Microsoft Networks.
To fix this error.
Uninstall Comms in Add/Remove Programs (Windows Setup)
Reboot
Reinstall Comms
Edit Network Protocols

You can use system file checker.
Go to start and go programs>accessories>system information.
Once there, click on tools and then system file checker. Then extract the missing file.

Ignoring my email address, take my advice,
the solution is very simple:
Go into the Network control panel.
Select "Add..." then "Client"
Choose "Client for Microsoft Networks"
Select "Add..." then "Service"
Choose "File and Printer Sharing for
Microsoft Networks"
Then Hit "OK" and wait while it adds lots of
files from the Windows 98 CD (if it can't
find it on its own after you inserted the
disk try "D:\Win98" for the source)
After it is finished it should ask you
(possibly after a few seconds delay) to
restart....do so and you are a

When I installed a D-link card, I encountered the same problems like all of U !! (Don't ask OC25.dll, because I don't have that one !)
So if U need those files just mail me, and I will send them 2 U ASAP.

This is a Virtual Device Drive file that exists in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder of your PC. For a quick solution try copy the file from another PC (Located in the same location) and Paste it into the above mentioned URL. Overwrite existing file. I have encountered this problem and did the above and all appears to be OK. However it is likely that my problem was caused by a corruption and none of the above mentioned arguments.

On startup my PC missed vredir.vxd
Eliminated by: Inserting Win98 install CD into drive & re-install Communications group (Add/Remove Programs)
Next reboot.... Everything is like OK...

I suggest you look at Microsoft Support article Q235276. If Vredir.vxd is missing try to re-install your Win 95 or Win98. Failing that I can e-mail you the program, it is small.

I was getting an invalid vredir reference error that went away when I re-installed the ipx/spx and netbui protocalls. (I had removed these since I only use tcp/ip) I then went back in and simply un-bound the adapters from the protocals I didn't use.

I had a much different problem. My windows 98 wouldn't shut down, and I had problems connecting to my DSL. When I went Step-by-Step on booting in, and said "no" to loading the vredor.vxd ALL of those problems went away.
However, I don't know how to keep that file from loading every time without doing a Step-by-step boot, AND I wonder if I still somehow need this file. Suggestions? Email me, thank!

I got messages about vredir.vxd, dfs.vxd, & MSNP32.dll after installing Intel's AnyPoint home networking USB adapter and running the install software. Nothing else has changed on my system recently. Following the steps listed above have not worked for me yet. Haven't tried reinstalling Microsoft Network functions as Jeff suggested, but all others have failed.
