i have a windows 98 machine that i am using at school. i want to know if i could create a VPN through the internet to my desktop when im at school so i can use the hard drive at home for storing school files (i have a tendency to loose stuff) im not extremely smart when it comes to this stuff but i think i have made some progress. i can use remote desktop through the internet, but thats it. ive tried the VPN but nothing. it says i have been disconected. so if anyone can give me a link to a website or something, that would be great. i will continue searching through forums and on google. thanks in advance.

You need to go ask your instructor, or the school's computer system administrator. THEY are the ones to make this decision, and may take a dim view. If it's ok, they should be able to help you set it up.

wouldnt it just be using the internet connection though? like say i wanted to do this from my friends house to mine. when im at his place i can use his internet and then id be able to use a VPN to connect to my desktop at home then access the hard drive and stuff. i always thought that it would work no matter what internet your on.

But having a connection to any machine beyond an administrators' control (across the limits of the firewall) isn't something many admins' would permit.

No they wouldn't. My college does not allow students to trunk a line through their internet account as it is a blatant security risk. Even if it's a VPN. you could try several programs, but i wouldn't as you may be accused of haccking the network and have all your privelages removed.

You say Remote Desktop works fine.
Which VPN client are you trying to use?
Does your home's ISP provide any free ftp storage and can you access/upload to ftp sites from your school.

How many MBs of files are you referring to?

You could always get yourself a flash drive. Store the files on it and then you can add them to your home PC when you are there and need them. Then again, if it is just backups that you are concerned with then a flash drive resolves that problem.

You could also email the needed files, use Remote Desktop to open and Save the files to your hard drive.

So, it would seem that you have plenty of solutions to getting needed school files to your home PC for backup purposes.

Was there something more specific that you are trying to do beyond just backing up files because you loose stuff?

Otherwise I agree that the school system administrator is the one to communicate with for your needs/desires.

Regards,
Bryan
