volume control missing

My volume control is missing. Cannot update driver in device manager, says OK; show volume control on takbar checkbox is grayed out; Am NOVICE if you haven't already guessed and all I want to do is hook up speakers.

HELP?!! Please

Uninstall your sound card and drivers and reinstall.

If the sound came with the system, the proper drivers should be on the HP site in the software downloads for your model.
The system model number is on a small label on the case somewhere.
