I recently reformatted my brothers computer, an HP pavilion, with Windows 98SE. After installing 98SE again I recieved the following error, "Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer.
C:\Windows\system\vmm32.vxd: missing/unable to load." Restarting the computer only brings the message back again. I already checked out microsofts website and found information about the disabiling of Umaxis11.386, and smis11.386 device driver files, but those arent listed in my system.ini files, and search found no results. I am able to log in safe mode, but with not all the drivers listed, Im not able to find what I'm looking for. A second reformatting resulted in the same problem. Anyone with suggestions or similar problems, please let me know, Thanks.

VMM32.vxd is actuall built at windows installation time. THUS, you can not download it, install it from the CD or copy it from another PC.
As for getting around the problem, you could try the install with a minimum amount of hardware installed. Ie: remove sound card, modem, and any other devices you may have attached.
Is there a UMAX scanner on your computer?
