OS: Win98
CPU/Ram: 400mhz/128mb
Comment:

When i shutdown my pc via the start menu instead it decides to restart.
Also when the pc is on using the power button to turn it off does nothing.
so the only alternative isto pull the plug out.
However when starting up the pc i get vmm32.vd could not load (missing or corroupt)

It then shuts itself off.
When I turn it back on again the safemode menu apears i choose normal and it works fine.... UNTIL the next shutdown.
I vicious cycle.

I have replace the vmm32.vxd from another pc i have but still the error occours.
its in c:\windows\system
and also in c:\windows\system\vmm32\

What can i doooo???
help much appreciated.

Try post #1. Another way is to re-install Windows.

I have never tried the following (a bit complicated) but you may wish to consider it:
http://www.easydesksoftware.com/news/news10.htm

Note that there should normally be only the one copy of vmm32.vxd (in c:\windows\system).

If you get it working then backup vmm32.vxd so that you can get out of this problem if it should ever arise again. Whatever you do DONT use sfc to restore this file (the Windows CD copy is only a shell).

Further thoughts. What worries me with the link I gave you is that you have already put another vmm32.vxd in place (from another machine). It may therefore do no more than restore back to the version you put in, which doesn't work on your machine.

The trouble with vmm32.vxd is that it is made for your machine when you first install Windows so is somewhat unique.

You could "shut down" to DOS and type scanreg /fix (then cross all fingers and toes because I am none too hopeful).

Probably Windows reload is the only way forward, but see if anyone else can come up with a better idea.
