I don't know the answer for certain but if you have been replacing IE and Netscape files using sfc then whoever suggested doing so was in error. In which case you might have to re-install both browsers.

IE & Netscape files most certainly get updated. If you replace them with old files from the W98SE CD then you are certain to get problems.

See this (my collation and WhitPhils additions):
SFC CAN GET IT WRONG

You could try running IE Repair (Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs, double click "Microsoft IE & Tools" entry). If it reports wrong file versions then that is your answer. I'm not sufficiently familiar with Netscape to comment further on that.

Sounds like it could be a Java problem (if I had to guess)

It's kind of hypnotizing, isn't it?

There's got to be a Linux joke in there somewhere.

Thanks Derek. Ran SFC again for curiosity, no problem. Have run IE repair twice recently with no problem showing. Got IE popup on a local page, "this page provides potentially unsafe information to an ActiveX control. Your current security settings prohibit running controls in this manner. As a result this page may not display correctly".????
All my settings are set as default. Any comments or suggestions to a helpful site?
When I try to reach Windows Update I get a blank page except for'"var curSite=3". I am quietly going crazy here!!

Reference to an ActiveX control makes me wonder. If you right click your C drive/Properties you will see the Disk Cleanup button. Tick everything (well, recyle bin is unimportant) and run it.

This will clear, among other things, "Downloaded Program Files". There will be ActiveX components here which could be faulty or even malware. The downside to doing this is that you might get asked to install some of them again when browsing (things like Flash Player and other harmless ones).

Have you run anti-malware programs like Ad-Aware, SpyBot Search & Destroy, SpywareBlaster? There is no definite reason to suspect that malware is present but if there is the symptoms can be varied. Often spyware/malware is badly written and causes gliches.

DEREK et al. Asked all experts I could find and the best advice received was to uninstall everything and reinstall Windows 98. Before I did this, got fed up with the months of mucking around and bit the bullet today and brought home a new Packard Bell with all the goodies, so tonite am surfing and finally able to read all pages properly. Many thanks for your help. CIAOU.

Hi again Derek. Pls see 15 above. Have followed your suggestions to other enquirers regarding similar problems both here & on windows bbs. Have a few other suggestions to work on now but would appreciate your input as my 16yr old needs this machine for schoolwork. Bought a 40GB HDD with 8MB cache (Western Digital) and machine seems to recognise it all but ram has reduced to 32MB from 63 previously so will have to find that setting.

Sorry, I didn't notice your #15.

Are you using a W98 Startup Disk (made on a W98 machine)?

If so, and your CD drive was previously D then it should become E when using W98 Startup Disk (some downloaded ones are different).

Assuming it's the W98 floppy I mentioned then you boot up with it and get the A prompt. You then put your CD in and type E: (hit Return). Next just type setup and hit Return.

Tell me the error message you get when following the above step by step procedure, and at exactly which point you get it.

"Bad command or file name" means the system doesn't know what you mean. There can be several reasons for this. It could be an error in what you typed (it has to be exact). It could be that the file you typed in doesn't exist. If you are on the wrong drive it would do this. If it is not a proper W98 CD or it is faulty it would also do this.

I don't know how much longer we've got on here.
I thought posts only lasted about a month and this one is well over that. The post stays but eventually it will not accept any new postings. If this suddenly happens raise a new post.

Hang on, I've just read your post again. Are you saying you've now managed to load Windows?

If so I think this would be a good time to start a brand new post. You will then get more helpers and the post will last. If all you have done is changed the HD (not video card or anything else) then I don't know why the RAM has reduced. There's no setting for this.

Its the win setup I cant get to.
E:\>dir tells me that Win 98 & WIN98_SE are on the CD.
E:\>CD\WIN98_SE\SETUP gives me
E:\WIN98_SE\SETUP> prompt. If I put C: in here I get
C:\_ Anything I put here gets "bad.."

You've lost my rather. Is that CD a proper Windows CD or something that has been made up by someone? I've never known a CD with both W98 & W98SE on it. Is it from Microsoft?

So, it's not easy to help.

This bit "E:\WIN98_SE\SETUP> prompt" makes me think that you are now in a SETUP sub-folder of WIN98_SE (which is all quite unusual). Maybe there is a setup.exe in that folder, so if you just type setup and hit Return it might do something. I'm not really sure what will happen with that CD.

The procedure I gave in #18 if follow exactly will work for either a normal W98 CD or a normal W98SE CD.
