Name: Deke
I ran my free AVG virus scan this morning and got a hit on my old Delindex.bat that I haven't used in a long time. I sent it to the virus valt.
Decided to hunt of the post on here where Renassiance Man had brought out a new one. Everytime I access the thread I get another popup that a virus is detected. Would somebody else try this link and see if this happens. If you are using AVG it would be more helpful.
I feel like it is something in this mornings AVG update that is showing up in error as that .bat file has been on my pc since way back.

If you think there is a link here to a virus then contact the webmaster. Don't ask others to infect themselves to verify for you. Webmaster is Justin Weber. Send him a private message here.

Thanks for the help. Your seem to be the spokesman here now so why don't you notify Justin.

Hey,
Sometimes virus checkers look in the text of files and come up with false positives. I loaded it and see no problem. Can anyone else confirm what is going on with this page?
Justin

I use AVG and don't get any virus detected warnings on that page. I also have delindex.bat on every computer. No problems.

Can't test as I have no anti virus software running but given Renaissance Man's thread lists all the program lines (including the 'deltree' ones that cause the problem) I'm sure that's what your AVG is detecting.
I don't run anti virus software but keep track of what's on my PC. I'll run hijackthis every few days to make sure nothing is running that's not supposed to be. I check the windows folder, windows\system, windows\temp and the start menu to make sure no new files have shown up. It's not foolproof of course but after going to the page everything checked out OK.
Dave01, can AVG be configured to scan web pages?

DAVEINCAPS: I'm running the free version with few options. Maybe someone running the paid version can answer.

Justin, Dave01 and DAVEINCAPS I am sorry for getting a little testy on my last post.
I also run AVG Free. I am ashamed to admit I don't know if I can post an image here or not or I would have posted the AVG pop-up I get when accessing that link. Here it is the hard way.
THREAT DETECTED!
While closing file:C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\2PHBYAX6\107273[1].html
Virus found BAT/Deleter
As soon as I click on the link and the thread opens up I get the warning popup.
The only thing I can see is that yesterdays AVG update is causing what you'll mentioned and picking up some line in RM's bat file.
If more info is needed from me let me know.
Thanks for your patience for a momentary laspe in my demeanor.

Hey,
That's what I thought. It seems to be a false positive.
Thanks for letting me know about it though,
Justin

DAVEINCAPS, you said "I don't run anti virus software but keep track of what's on my PC". You appear to be an intelligent person. Why would you not be running an anti-virus software on your computer? Do you run a firewall?
Life's more painless for the brainless.

Deke, delete your temporary internet files. Your AVG isn't detecting the problem on Renaissance Man's computing.net thread. It's detecting it on the image stored in your TIF.
Jennifer, in the past I haven't been satisfied with virus software I've tried. They would either slow the system down too much, not catch the infections or both. Many of the virus files that sneak into a computer are randomly named and are harder for AV software to detect.
But the interesting thing about downloaded files is their time and date stamp is the same as their download time and date. The same is true for modified files. So I can find any new or altered files by sorting by date. Generally before shutting of the PC at night I do a 'dir/o:d' from dos in the directories I mentioned above. All I need to do is verify any newly dated files are supposed to be there.
If I'm on the internet and get attacked it's often obvious--web pages don't open and boxes will pop up about error loading some file I've never heard of. Then I'll shutdown and restart in dos, delete the files, do a scanreg/restore and I'm back up and running.
Only rarely do I have any problems as my internet wandering is pretty boring and I usually don't end up at problem sites. I know it's a calculated risk but it works because I know what's supposed to be on my computer and (so far anyway) I've been able to find and fix any virus problems.
It seems though that most of the viruses you come across now are meant to be spread via online activity and aren't the kind you'd find 10 or 15 years ago that would eviscerate your personal system. But even then I've got most of my data files on a separate drive and reinstalling 98 is no big deal.

I deleted my intire IE5 TIF folder then went back to the link to RM's thread and the AVG popup came back up. The 107273[1].html file will comeback everytime I go to RM's thread.
This is not going to effect my pc but was just curiuous about what is causing it.

Yeah, every time you open the page the image is going in your TIF. Try disabling the scanning of your TIF and see if the message stops coming up.

I am running the free version of AVG and I don't belief I can select it not to scan TIF.
While looking around in AVG I noticed I have "scan infectable files and selected types of documents" checked instead of "scan all files." Which of these should be checked.
I will stay away from RM's thread and see if I get anymore of that kink of popups from anywhere else.

Both you and Dave01 have the free version. Maybe he'll post back his scan settings.
When you delete the temp internet files make sure all browser windows are closed. Close your ISP if possible. Any TIF entries in use won't be deleted otherwise. Delete the history too.

I acutally have a .bat file that the guys on here helped me with and when clicked on it runs CCleaner and also deletes my win386.swp file which get's rather large and from my research stores things like the infamous index.dat files.
When I sometimes delete the index.dat files manually I will use the following in DOS to check them:
CD\WINDOWS\TEMPOR~1\CONTENT.IE5(This will also be .IE5 even if you have installed IE6.)
EDIT /75 INDEX.DATThan you guys again for all the help and info.

A few days ago I had similar trouble with a batch file of mine which had the deltree command in it. Others with the same command were not affected. This happened on two machines (XP & W98SE) after AVG Updates.
I narrowed it down to just this line to cause AVG to report a virus:
deltree /y c:\progra~1\real\realon~1\history
I emailed AVG (virus@grisoft.com) who were very prompt, acknowledged that it was a false positive and said they would fix it in a future update.
PS. Latest update has now fixed problem (3 files on my machine and this webpage).

Hi Derek
I just opened this page and got a AVG popup and hadn't even clicked on the link I first posted on here. I just updated this morning also. Just going to ride it out and see what happens.

Guess what? Problem solved. I just thought I had updated AVG this morning. Updated and came back to this page and even clicked on the RM's link and no AVG popup.
Derek you are still THE MAN.

Yeah Deke - I was a bit late seeing this post (I 'm largely a "browser" around here these days).
Posting that line on here kinda upset AVG. All's well that ends well tho.
Thx for kind words.
