Hi,

Sorry if this message is a bit long but my problem is quite hard to explain.

Basically, my computer kept freezing over the weekend and when I pressed Ctrl, Alt & Delete I found 20 or 30 programs called "Wscript" running. Every time I cancelled a "Wscript" another would appear.

I searched the internet for "WScript" and found a lot about the "Kak Worm" virus.

I assumed this was my problem as I have Win 98, Outlook 5 etc. but I downloaded automatic uninstall software to get rid of both version A and B of the virus and they say my computer is not infected.

I then decided to search my hard drive for "Wscript" and found a wscript.exe file that had been on my computer for about 2 years. I tried to re-name the file to see if it was causing the problem but couldn't because it was being used by windows. I went into DOS and renamed it from there.

I turned my computer back on and now I get a message saying "Windows cannot find wscript.exe. This program is needed for opening files of type VBScript Script file"

It then asks me to manually find the file.

My computer runs as normal now, so does anyone know what virus I have and how I can get rid of it? Could

Thanks for your help.

Regards

Rick

Rick, If as you say, your computer runs normal now, You do not have a problem. What has happened is this: You originally were infected with the Kak Worm. Your antivirus deleted the worm, but left behind the changes in the system caused by the worm, which caused the problems. The fix you downloaded successfully removed the changes, restoring system to normal, but as the worm itself had already been deleted, reported no infection. This is the way these fixes work.

Windows Scripting Host is an open invitation to viruses. It's the method used most often by virii. You can really help yourself by disabling this 'very seldom used' Windows option. Also to make it easier to see viruses, enable 'show file extensions'.

Show file extensions
Go to My Computer > View > Folder Options > View and unselect 'Hide file extensions for known file types'.
Remove 'Windows Scripting Host'
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Windows Setup > Accessories > Details and unselect Windows Scripting Host

. (These files extensions could potentially be dangerous to your system if they're really viruses: .js, .jse, .vbs, .scr, .shs, and .shb.)

Thanks for all your help, but I now have a new problem!

I did as suggested by "witt" (response number 2) and disabled WScript.

Now, instead of getting a message asking for me to find wscript.exe I now get an "open with" screen appear and it is asking me to choose the software I would like 'Help.vbs' opened in! ( i get around 20-30 of them and if i press cancel another one just appears)

"Witt" also suggested in Response 2 that .vbs files are potentially dangerous so can I assume help.vbs is my virus?

And if so, can i just delete it?

Regards

Rick

I see NO mention of having or running an anti virus scanner!!! Do You have AV software and if so have you run an "All Files" scan, using the most recent updated virus definitions data ? If not, get one and do that, to see what else may be messing up your system ,or just waiting to do so !
