Video clip editing software?

Hi, I found some really fun video clips on the internet and downloaded them. I'd like to edit some because they are too dark to see really well. Is there a free software program that can do that. So I can see the fun better without messing up the interesting sounds? Thanks

I believe 'Virtualdub' is capable of lightening up dark clips.

Ok, I'll try that again. It seems kind of complicated and I couldn't get it to save the sound when I edited something.

Using Virtual Dub, save the audio first and then edit the clip, add the audio file you saved back into the clip after editing.
