Comment:

After a format C: and Win98 reinstall the video card was fine on my monitor, returned the PC to friend and the video card reverted to generic and 16 colors on his monitor. Reseating the card did not help, nor did removing and reinstalling video in device manager. What's the fix?

You need the latest drivers from the manufacturer. If you know the exact make and model of the card, visit the manufacturer's website and download from there. If not, download Unkown Device Identifier (freeware). Run it and find your video card listing. Note the make and model, goto Google and search for it. If you can, find the official manufacture's website because they will provide the latest and most stable drivers for your card.

I hope this helps,

James ;)

Hi caleon, James, hi everyone,

The software advised by James is good!
Aother way to know about your video adapter is:
-go to command mode (Start/Run/type command then click on OK) and type down DEBUG and Enter, at the prompt (dash),
D C000:40
Q
Have a look at the right column and you'll read make and model
-type Exit to go back to Windows.

HTH

Have a good day,
Gérard from Paris, France
