Hi, I have just formatted my hard drive and fixed the partition from 2gb back to 6gb. I went to install windows again but the computer didn't like booting from the floppy so I was lazy and just swapped the hard drive into another computer that wasn't cranky and installed it on that one, it installed fairly well until it booted into windows and couldn't install a few dll's because it couldn't read the disk for some reason but it still booted into windows anyway. When I swapped the drive back into the original computer when it booted it said invalid disk Bla Bla Bla, so I checked the bios to see if it found the drive (which it did) and change the boot settings to boot from the cd-rom. When it started it went to the boot menu I chose to go to the dos prompt. I booted windows form the prompt and it went to boot but this screen came up:
VFAT Device Initialisation FailedA device or resource required by VFAT is not present or unavailable. VFAT cannot continue loading.
System halted.I put the drive back into the other computer again and windows loads fine. What's going on? Is it hardware or software?
Thanks for any help.

When you start Windows, you may receive the following error message on a blue screen
VFAT Device Initialisation failed
A device or resource required by VFAT is not present or is unavailable. VFAT cannot continue loading.
System halted. To resolve the problem, use one of the following methods.
If the Ifshlp.sys file is missing from the Windows folder, extract a new copy of the file from your original Windows floppy disks or CD-ROM to the Windows folder.
Restart your computer, press and hold down CTRL after your computer completes the Power On Self Test (POST), and then choose the Safe Mode Command Prompt Only option from the Start-up menu.
Use a text editor to open the Config.sys file. Delete the line that loads the Ifshlp.sys file. Note that Windows automatically loads this driver when you start your computer. Save and then close the Config.sys file. Restart your computer.

Hope this helps

Thanks Dave and Krystyna, I tried some of the things you said but with not much luck, so I spent about an hour stuffing around and decided to reformat it and install windows again and now it works fine. Thanks for the help.
