Ok, this is sort of a weird thing and my pc has never done this before. First off, I've been getting the zestyfind hompage crap, which I've tried several spyware programs to get rid of it. After a couple reboots, I'm not getting it anymore, but am still getting those http://69.20.62.53/yyy2.html popups.
Anyway, I noticed after my last reboot, I hit into ctrl-alt-delete, to see if anything was loading that could possibly be popping the webpage up, and noticed that there is no explorer.exe in my ctrl-alt-delete box. What's reeeeally weird about this though is that my computer still runs fine. My desktop loads normal, my mouse works fine, I can open folders and programs and everything. But I just have a feeling this still can't be a good thing. For instance, whenever my pc freezes, I always hit ctrl-alt-delete and close out explorer first which usually unfreezes my pc. So, does anyone know what might be happening with explorer.exe? How do I get it to start up again? Any ideas would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Laura

Click on the Processes tab. You should see explorer.exe listed.
If you don't see it. Then while you are under the processes tab click on "file" from up top and then "run" and in the dialogue box type explorer.exe and click "ok".Have you tried running CWShredder, or BSODemon.
They are very good at shutting down spyware .dll's and can help you get rid of them. You can find them easily by doing a search for them on Google.com.

Look in your C:\windows directory to see that you actually have your explorer.exe file there.

Hi Laura, Dave02, Terri, hi everyone
You could check within System.ini under the boot section if it reads:
[boot]
shell=Explorer.exeIf it doesn't, copy and paste the line shell=Explorer.exe
To get rid of the http://69.20.62.53/yyy2.html popups, you could go trough these Getting rid of junk files procedures.
(http://www.mesich.com/junkfiles.html)It is mentioned in the above link, but want to bring it to the attention once more as it may save you a lot of time, Delindex.bat by Renaissance Man to be found at the Freeware page.

Hi Laura, Dave02, Terri, The Count, hi everyone,Dave02 (response #1), do you have these tabs in Windows 98SE Task Manager?
Have a good day,

Run msinfo32.exe and on the left expand the Software Environment branch. Then select Running Tasks and look on the right to see if explorer.exe is listed there.

I'm sorry.
My Bad.
I've gotten so used to running XP, I had forgotten how limited 98SE was in that department.
Thanks for pointing that out.

Hi Laura, Dave02, Terri, The Count, caza, hi everyone,Dave02, no problem!
No luck! I hoped you had a tip to get these tabs for Win98! ;-)Does someone know about ATM - Another Task Manager? I have this URL on a web page on mine for years and I never tried it! I think it improves Task Manager!

Hi everyone! Thanks for the responses!
Terri, I checked my windows folder and explorer.exe is still there.
The Count, I also checked in system.ini and explorer is listed and checked. Also, thanks for the info about getting rid of junk files. I'll have to check that out.
Caza, checked msinfo32.exe, and Explorer.exe is running! Along with a lot of other stuff that isn't listed in the ctrl-alt-delete box. So does that mean explorer is ok? Any ideas why it wouldn't show up in ctrl-alt-delete?
What's funny about all this is, my computer is running better than ever. I mean, it's quick to open folders and programs, which it hasn't done in a loooong time. As long as nothing's being messed up permanently or anything, I don't really care if explorer is listed in ctrl-alt-delete. ;)

I'm not sure why you don't have explorer.exe listed in the Task Manager, but you're not the only one to have that problem.
Take a look at the following URL:

Hi y'all,
I would really like to clear something up..The explorer world is complicated enough:-)
1. In task manager it's listed "Explorer" not Explorer.exe..
2. The correct file name is "Iexplore.exe". located in C:\programs\Internet explorer...
3. Explorer.exe is "Windows explorer" located in C:\windows...
Now I can sleep:-)

Hey, but now I can't sleep....This is the way I've always seen things:
1. explorer.exe is for Windows Explorer but is simply listed as explorer in Ctrl-Alt-Del
2. iexplore.exe is for Internet Explorer and does not show in Ctrl-Alt-Del
Are we saying the same thing? It's just that your item 2 threw me a little.

I took a look at the link given in #9. Reading between the lines it looked as if changing temporarily to winfile and then back again was what cured that posters problems.D

Try this....go to msconfig...system ini....boot... and the check to see if explorer has a capital E. remove this or just retype explorer.
