Subject: Very difficult modem problem please help.

Comment: I have spent weeks trying to figure this one out. I have a Azt 4029 isa modem that came with my Packard Bell computer. I have signifigant knowledge of computers and i built a new one and put in the old modem in a custom built computer. It worked fine for months but then i was visiting a site and encountered a problem where i could no longer visit any web pages. I deciceded that it was most likely a virus so i reformated my hard drive and reinstalled everything. Everything went fine until it came time to install my modem. Now all of a sudden it no longer displayed a Aztech modem it showed a 3com t1 winmodem. I decided to just let it slide and try it out. Ever since i have not been able to connect at my previous speed of 49993. Now i connect and 31200. Now this may not seem like a large differece but when you talk bout downloading large quantities of large files it turns in to a very large amount of hours lost. Plus it increases lag and other things. I really need help with this problem. I have tried many different things such as downloading the drivers for it from azt website and using standard drivers but nothing worked. In fact they wouldnt work at all. I would really appreciate it if anyone could help me out with this.

Reply: (edit)Seeing as you have a significant knowlege of computers! I presume that you have adjusted the connect as speed? Are you still going through the same ISP as you were before? The only thing that has changed since it connected at 49,00bps is the software on your newly built hard drive. Are you sure that you have loaded everything back on as it was before? If all you do is connect to the internet you only need TCP/IP if you have to many other protocols installed that can slow it down. Did you change ISA slots and ask windows to detect new hardware? I know with my old ISA modem there were loads of different jumpers on it so that I could force it on a certain com port or choose PnP. Is it still sitting on the same com port as it was before? First thing I'd do though is check the connect as speed.

Reply: (edit)And also check the properties of the com port and raise the port speed up to 57,000. When windows detects this mysterious 3Com modem can you not just accept it, then go back to device manager once it has been installed and update driver with the aztech disk? Have disk button?

Reply: (edit)Jesse, In the Modem properties click the advance tab and select addtional commands. Add the proper modulation command to force the connection from your present V34 configuration to a 56K configuration. The command depending on whether it is a K56flex modem or a V90 modem are [+MS=K56] or [+MS=V90] Regretfully this is a work around, but it is a time saver. Alot of ISP's have older X2 modems they have modified to 56K operation. These modems don't do a very good job of handling the V90 protocol. The ISP I use does this and from time to time swap modems for maintenance. When they do connectivity goes to hell and speed slows to a trickle. I have had so many problems I have a 33.6K V34 modem and a 56K modem that I force to K56flex. Hope this will help you.

Reply: (edit)Of course i checked the connect speed. I had not moved my modem card either when i reinstalled. I also had not changed my hard drives when i switched computers. I also downloaded the proper drivers for the card and then installed it but that didnt work at all. The port speed was set higher than 57000. I did not switch ISP's either. Also there are no jumper settings on my isa card. It is set on PnP. This is one really hard problem.
