vertical lines on screen--FROZE Computer

Anytime I get on the web with IE.5 (Win98) the computer freezes completely! The mouse won't move, ctrl-alt-delete does not work, nothing works. My only option is to reset it, which of course causes scandisk to run. It never finds any errors.
Each time this happens, I have small vertical lines running across the top of the screen. Can anyone give me a hint as to how to take care of this, short of reformatting the harddrive and reinstalling everything?
Diana, In system properties/performance/graphics, set hardware accceleration to none. In display properties/settings, set colors down to 256. If this cures the problem, either update drivers for video card, or replace with better card. Al

Thanks Al. I have an videocard, and I just replaced it in this troubled computer. So far, everything is working fine. Maybe the videocard went bad? After 11 months of use six days a week 11 hours a day?

I SPOKE TOO SOON. The computer froze again exhibiting the same problems as before. I will try your suggestion of adjust the hardware acceleration, etc. as well as installing an updated driver and see if that takes care of the problem.

Try scanning your computer for virii (viruses) in many cases viruses can cause this screen lock and create these vertical lines, red, gray, white, ect... Hey its happened to me =) sux but just give this a try
