usr courier hst modem wont work

i just bought an old dell computer from a yard sale and i tried to hook my modem up to it and i hook it to the serial port and had hardware wizard scan it finds it and the lights change but when i try to connect it says its not connected turn off then turn back on i do and try it again same thing happens is this a problem with the drivers, adpater, modem, ports, or what ive tried everything i know oh by the way when i scan it it calls it standard modem not courier hst 14,000

Im really dumb when it comes to the computer.I have a brand new computer but was given an old pager bell legend 650x so I thought great now Ill have one in the bedroom, but I cant get it to do anything besides window3.1. dont know what to do should I just toss it or is there hope for it.
