Comment: Hello! Can anyone help me? I am using Win 98 boot disk to boot up Win 95. I have read so much on the process but am totally confused. I am at the "A:/>" prompt which I can make the "C:/> prompt. Which do I use and what do I do next? Is there step by step info on this anywhere? I'm not a professional.

Reply: (edit)My 95 went on the blink. Maybe crashed. I don't know if I can get back to Windows but I would like to see if it is still there or if I need to reinstall? I just don't know how to do that...to check if Win 95 is still there.

Reply: (edit)What happens when you try to boot windows 95. Any error messages? Also, try to boot into safe mode (hold down shift key when windows starts to boot).

Reply: (edit) In safe mode message says: "Windows is bypassing your startup files." Next line shows the "A:/>" prompt
(It maybe bypassing startup files because it doesn't read win 98 since win 95 is installed. If I were to reinstall, I could only reinstall win 95 by disks.

Reply: (edit)I have just come on-line and read the posts and I must admit I am a little confused. Can you establish certain points. (1)When you try to boot normally from the HDD,what problem or error messages occur? (2)When you try to boot normally from the HDD and hold down the shift key, what happens? Do you get any error messages or problems? (3)When you try to boot from the HDD, what happens when you press F8 a few times and then select from the menu, the various options such as Command prompt only, Command prompt safe mode only, and safe mode? (4) What is it that you want to achieve to reinstall WIN 95 or WIN 98 ? You say that holding down the shift key takes you to the A: prompt. It sounds like you are booting from a floppy. We can probably help better if we know this information.

Reply: (edit)You say you can switch to c:\ - try doing that and typing win (or C:\windows\win) and see if that does anything, or at least generates an error.
