Windows 98 with MS office 2000

1) The Registry file ‘user.exe’ is corrupted or otherwise impaired. Can only start in safe mode otherwise the PC freezes upon trying to log on and is completly out, nothing works.

2) When trying to restore the file from the backup CD ROM, the PC does not give me the CD ROM drive as an option to choose from, but only A: and C:, hence I cannot access the restoring files.

3) When trying to restart the machine I receive the following error message:
0028: COO20DC VxD NTKERN (01) + 00000560

Any help on how i can get this PC fixed is highly appreciated.

You can not access the cdrom in safe mode. You can use a bootdisk with cdrom support to copy the files to your hard drive and then boot back into safe mode and restore the file.

A few extra points.

Not sure about function of user.exe but I don't think it is Regsitry file (perhaps you are confusing it with user.dat). In Properties it says "Windows User-interface core component".

It appears to get updated somehow (Windows update maybe). The original version might still get you out of trouble just the same. So a little research may be justified after this.

There are a lot of hits about this file if you put it's name in the search line of Google.

Neat suggestion from smithdk. If you previously made a Startup Disk in Control Panel/Add-Remove this will do fine. I trust you are happy enough with DOS to use that suggestion - shout back if not.

On my W98"SE" there is a copy of this file (newer version than one on Windows CD) in:
c:\windows\system
c:\windows\options\cabs
