And i am having the same problem that this person was:

whisper: It just appears as USB Disk

Everything is working, but i dont see in my computer, i even see a little icon in the bottom right tray, but nothing is showing up

also:

Once again, when it says new hardware is found and then it says " install new sofware for your hardware ", the hourglass comes up and thats it, it just sits there and it wont get pass the screen to proceed to the desktop.

What do you guys think is the problem?

... I use an IDE to USB2 converter device on my laptop and the Hard drive jumper is always set to "master"

from- that Seagate site

... worth checking the jumper setting.

... I guess that the new drive is formatted when you get it?

Well let me ask you this, i have 2 quick questions:

#1 How much power is taken from your computer when using these USB hard drives, because my PSU is only at 90watts. I dont have any trouble with anything else on my computer, 512megs of ram, geforce 5500 256mb , etc. ????

#2 I was told i was suppose to buy a PATA HD internal device, but is any of these PATA?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...

Ultra ATA is PATA RIGHT? i dont see any ribbons?

Thanks

Where did you get the 90watt power supply number from? If there is a PSU made with that little power output I have not seen one.

To answer your questions in order. USB ports are limited to 500mA, which isn't that much. There are basically two classes of USB external drives. The 2.5" are meant to be portable and require no external power source but can be more problematic. The 3.5" drives have a USB data cable that connects to the computer and an AC cord that powers the drive motor.

Win98se requires USB drivers to be installed in order to use USB devices.

The normal method to install a USB device on Win98se is to install the drivers PRIOR to connecting the device.

You purchased the 2.5” with no external power source. This drive should still function for you but you will need to install the correct drivers for Win98. Below is a link to the Seagate drivers. Download and install the drivers designed for Win98 on the linked page. Be sure to disconnect the USB drive and reboot. Then install the drivers. IF instructed to reboot again, do so and then connect the USB drive. Windows should automatically find the drivers.

Your CD drive MAY be relettered after installing the USB.

If you wanted to install an additional INTERNAL harddrive you would probably need a PATA (parallel ATA) but without any specs for your computer we can't be sure.

You shouldbe able to get the USB external working.

OtheHill:

The 90watts powersupply unit came with my computer which is window98se. I think it was meant for it, because i never had any trouble with it, and i had this computer. You can check out this site for gateway products, etc 90WATTS PSU.

Its a nice site. :)

Thanks for the extra info.

Sorry for double posting, but i just wanted to say that the problem is solve. Seagate doesn't work on my computer for some reason.

I just tested out a Western Digital 1000GB USB device( my friend bought it over )and it loaded up fast and work just fine. So i'm buying a 250GB usb WD device soon.

peace :)
