hi
i'm trying to get an external cdrw to work with '98. unfortunately, it is a usb2 connection, and that's where i'm stuck.
is there any way in which i can somehow get windows to see usb2 instead of 1.1? like a program update or something?
the drive is an AOpen CDRW, and it is on a pc at work.
cheers

Hi,
If you install an additional PCI USB 2 card this should come with drivers for Windows 98 SE.
Ensure you choose a card that has drivers for 98SE. Not all PCI USB 2 cards will work with windows 98.
Alternative is to upgrade to Windows XP SP1, you will need SP 1 for USB 2.

can't do either sorry, the pc i'm working on is for my work, as part of a job i'm doing for a 3rd party. also, the program that the pc is using is only compatable with 98.
any other ideas?

If the computer only has USB 1.1 then you're stuck with it, barring an add-on card as mentioned above. There's no software fix to change 1.1 to 2.0.
Otherwise the problem is with the cd-rw drivers, which should have come with the device or would be available on Aopen's site.
I'm not sure which 98 version you have but you may need 98 SE to set everything up properly.

it is trying to load the driver for the burner, did you put disk in as my external hd controller asks for disk when i install it on customers' computers. what is make & model # of motherboard & version of 98 either fe or se

You sometimes need to point to the drivers on the installation disk by digging down into the subfolders. One other thing, most USB devices require that you install the drivers prior to connecting the device. Try removing any files related to this device, removing the device, rebooting and installing the software for the device. Shutdown, connect the device, reboot and see what happens.
