USB doesn't work!
----------------

(win 98se)
Hi,
please please can someone help
I recently purchased a 2nd hand Dell Optiplex GX1 600MHz 256MByte RAM for my dad to use his new digital camera.
The problem is that the 2 usb ports don't work...so neither will my dad's new camera..
I've tried several other usb items...and I've tried downloading/ reinstalling drivers and got nowhere. I've searched online and read webpages and tried various other things and now I'm stuck.
My "gut" feeling is that somehow something got disabled when the previous owner set it up for networking/high speed internet.
I've checked the bios to see if its disabled, but cant see anything in there to do with USB!
...and whats puzzling is that usb appears fine in device manager.
any ideas????
cheers
Trisha

The fact that the USB ports are shown without error in device manager sugests that the motherboard drivers and the win98 usb drivers are correctly installed.

Before you plug in the camera, you will need to install the drivers for it. These should be on a CD which was supplied with the camera. After these are installed, you can try plugging it in.

If this still doesnt work you might try opening the case and check that the usb ports are plugged into the motherboard.

Also, check the BIOS and make sure the USB ports are indeed enabled.

hi again, thanks for these replies...
1. yes...I installed the Cd that came with the camera...there weren't separate drivers as such, just a cd to install. I even downloaded new drivers...
2. I can't enabale/disable in the bios as USB isn't mentioned in there...have really looked!
3. I will open the PC up and check the motherboard connection and report back
...should it be easy to work out how they connect?

please keep the ideas coming :-)
thanks!
Trisha

Hi,
Is this relevant if the usb is part of the motherboard and not a seperate usb card?

I took a look inside the PC and because of the ports being behind a large object (power source?)it was hard to see much. But one thing for sure, the usb ports is very very close if not attached to the motherboard.

The USB port on the back of the case are connected directly to the motherboard. The two behind the flap on the front of the case will be connected by a cable which plugs into the motherboard.

It might be time to check that your problem isn't something really simple. You first plug the USB cable into the computer. Then you connect the other end into the camera. Then the step many people miss is... turn the camera on.

It's also possible that the port you are trying isn't working. Try another port.

Ive had the same problem. Ive connected a heap of PnP devices that do actually work. But recently ive tried to connect a USB Memory Stick and for the life of me i havent been able to get it to work. THe same device works on other computers not running Win98. I havent tried the device on another computer that runs on Win98. Someone recommended i install a USB PCI card but Ive found out they are only supported by Win98SE upwards.

I'd sooner have a full bottle in front of me than a full frontal labotomy

Hi BamBam, hows Pebbles?

You really should start your own thread as the answers for one question really only apply to that question.

I doubt you will be able to get the memory stick to work with windows 98 First Edition. They require 98SE with drivers or XP without.

Try another port.

I'e tried both ports about a hunded times and read and followed instructions on so many help websites and still nothing...I reckon that maybe they just dont work. I even downloaded a program which cheks them (and says they're fine)
I'm baffled.....
I've reinstalled the camera countless times. The identical procedure works on other pc's.....I've spent hours baffling my way through...to no avail
Thanks for your help I appreciate any more ideas.......

thanks for this......
This website is brilliant! I've spent the last few days trying out the ideas there. I think that anyone with usb problems will get them solved here unless the ports just don't work, which i think sadly may be my case :-(

I must now know enough to answer some other poeple's problems on USB now!

(but still appreciate more suggestions....!)

USB was meant to simplify connectivity problems. Sadly this doesn't seem to be the case for you.

You mentioned that neither of the ports work. You should have additional ports on the front of the case, behind a flap near the left hand side. These are on a separate controller and are definately worth trying.

One possibility not yet mentioned is another program might be disabling the ports. Scan for virus and spy/ad ware. You might also try shutting down all the unneeded processes with task manager (CTRL-ALT-DEL), just leave explorer running. Systray and your antivirus are pehaps optional.

sorry! I know I'm listed as having a Compaq but this is one i got for my dad. Its a Dell Optiplex GX1 and only has 2 usb.
Have run antivirus /spyware...run them weekly....
will try the shutting processes idea too...

Not sure if I've asked this before but should i buy a USB card (the usb ports i have are on the motherboard) does anyone know if that will solve things?
