USB Sindewinder crashes at start

I had a PC running XP, but I changed the OS for Win 98 (2nd. I had a Sidewinder Precision Wheel (USB) which worked fine(shame the games didn't).
After installing Win 98, when I install the wheel the system finds it when the usb is connected, I install the software and it shows it on the control panel. I can even calibrate it. The problems starts now; if I run any games they don't find it. When I reboot the PC I get a VxD error, followed by a general failure. I have to remove the usb cable to be able to boot it. It's obviously a drivers problem, I re-install the wheel software and the same happens. Any ideas?

The first site below is on troubleshooting USB in windows. The second site is on VXD errors in general, as you did not state the specific error. Good luck. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q263218&ID=KB;EN-US;Q263218&&FR=1
