Win 98SE, 256RAM, 800 MB. Is it normal that a USB device must be re-installed after being disconnected. I had to open the tower last week and again today. After getting everything reconnected last week I had to use the scanner (Canon N650U). Got error message could not communicate with scanner (TWAINS). I uninstalled-reinstalled and it was fine. After reconnecting today I tried scanner again- same problem. I don't remember this happening in the past, but I sometimes think my memory may need updated drivers. Anyone know if this is normal? Thanks for any info.

Next time just try unplugging and plugging it back in (USB port). My USB connected scanner seems to go in cycles -- sometimes its OK and sometimes it needs to be reconnected. Some day I'll try and figure out why; meanwhile it's just a minor annoyance.

(Memory doesn't use drivers...)

Thanks for the response, rac, I'll try that unplug-replug next time. Damned scanners are a pain, but nice to have. I'm glad memory doesn't require drivers, because I couldn't figure out where to connect my brain to the computer for a download.

Your subtle humor quite obviously went right by me -- I'm usually mnore adept at catching things like that. Must have been tired.
