Reply: (edit)I don't know if there is a correlation but a couple of months ago I RMAed a MB that had a Via USB 2.0 controller aboard (didn't know it was aboard). I couldn't get the machine to work properly even without the USB 2 drivers installed. My opinion is the Via controller isn't compatible with win98. Ran OK in win2000. I could be wrong.

Reply: (edit)Maybe, In my case the only USB 2.0 device I had was a digital camera. Everything else was USB 1.1. Theoretically USB is backward compatible but the camera wouldn't work at all. That said, in my experience, scanners are sometimes difficult to configure. Especially is they were designed to run on a different OS than you are using. One thing that I have found is this. Once you attempt an install, entries are made to the registry. These entries most likely will remain there even after an uninstall of the software. Subsequent attempts to install fail because of these old entries. The solution is to use a registry cleaner or manually remove these entries. Try Regcleaner. Find it here: www.worldstart.com/weekly-download/ archives/reg-cleaner4.3.htm - 19k Also, read the instructions on installing. The sequence of connecting and installing varies from brand to brand. Have you tried to correct the problem using device manager? If windows sees the device but doesn't recognise it there will be a yellow exclamation point next to the entry in device manager. Check properties for that device and you should find a place to provide the drivers or update them. You will need to tell windows that you have drivers and use browse to provide the path on the scanner disk.

Reply: (edit)What I think the message means is that the USB driver isn't found. If other devices work then maybe the scanner is USB2.0. I still suspect the VIA USB controller. I will not use anything from VIA myself. Too much agrevation in the past. Had I known that the MB I mentioned before had a VIA USB controller I wouldn't have bought it. The Chipset was SIS. Go figure. Did you cleanup your registry as I suggested?
