Hi
Im having mighty problems with my USB connections. Everything had been working fine with my USB ports untill the other day.I tried to upload some pics to my computer via my digital camera but it wasnt reconised by the computer. Ive tried all new drivers and even formatting and loading everything back onto the computer. And still nothing.Even in device manager theres no reported problems. And to add to matters my printer also isnt reconised and cant be used.
Can anyone help me with this problem.
Another thing i was gonna ask is that i have an extra set of USB ports on my compter and was wondering if there was something wrong with the extra USB ports would it interfere with the main USB ports from my motherboard.
Thanks for any help

Disconnect all USB equipment. Then uninstall all drivers with the associated nonfunctioning USB hardware. Verify all ports that were created by the hardware's installation disk has been removed in Device manager. If not, remove them manually. Reboot. Install the USB drivers for the PRINTER first, THEN attach the printer when the software tells you to, or after the software is finished installing. Reboot if necessary. Then attach the printer. Verify the printer works. If not, attach it to the "extra" USB ports and see if it works. If not, verify the printer will print a test page while not attached to the computer. This usually involves holding down the ON button for about 10 seconds, or a combination of button pushing, model depending. If it does print when not attached to the computer, then you may have a problem with your USB drivers. USB "splats" or problems usually will not show in Device Manager until you expand the tree. After you get the printer installed and working, install the drivers for your camera, reboot if necessary, then attach the camera. DO NOT install and attach the camera until AFTER the printer is working. There may be a hardware conflict between the two. Also check both vendors website for updated drivers and look under their supprt section for a list of known problems with their equipment. Almost always there is a list.
Virtually ALL USB equipment require the drivers to be installed before the equipment can be attached, otherwise headache and heartache appear.
Hope this helps...

Hi again
first of all i would like to thankyou for your help.ive tried everything you have suggested but still no luck.the thing that i cant get around is that everything has been working fine so im not sure about any conflicts.but i was wondering whether changing your processor could affect the usb ports.granted they have been working with the new processor but its the most recent addition to my computer.
thanks again

Not likely, but I learned a long time ago to never say never.
Did you print a test page while the printer was disconnected from the computer?
Try installing the hardware onto another computer, to make sure they are working properly.
Check the vendors' websites for "support". Sometimes they list the known problems.
Then check the MS knowledge base for known problems between your hardware and their OS. Sometimes your hardware is listed with the appropriate work arounds.
Last, call those vendors' tech support and have them walk you through the fix.
I've had to send 2 hard drives to 2 different vendors, Network Associates and NCSPearson, because they could not fix my problems over the phone, (3-4 DAYS each), without a resolution. Each vendor took about a week to fix the problem at their location, not including the shipping time.
While that option won't help you, at least it will put your problem on their radar screen. Who knows? Your resolution may end up on their website.

Hi
yeah i was able to print a test page and nothing to worry about regards to the printer.
ive tried 3 different usb devices but they all seem not to work and they are very new pieces of hardware. so i dont think that there would be a problem with the hardware.
ive sent an email to abit who made my motherboard. i can only assume and hope they have some kind of knowledge on these matters.so fingers crossed they will even reply at all.
what i was wondering was if the usb ports were protected by some kind of fusing.i definetely thinking towards the fact the motherboard has a problem somewhere.
this is becoming a nightmare and i havent a clue what could be wrong.
thanks again for your help

Most newer systems have two different types of USB ports installed, version 1.0 or 1.1 and 2.0 or newer. The 2.0 ports are usually the ones on the front of the computer, sometimes all are on the back. Depends on your models. I've had systems where the 1.1 drivers installed fine, but had to manually install the 2.0 drivers. Check your MB manual and ensure the correct drivers for all USB ports are installed. Device Manager may be of help here. Do you have a branch called "Other" with a question mark (I think)? If you do, the hardware listed under that branch may not indicate it is a USB hub and ports, but very well could be. And if it is, it means the drivers are not installed.
I say that because what I'm going to suggest now should only be performed if you are unsuccessful with everything else.
Click Start, Shutdown, Restart in MS-DOS mode, then OK.
At the C:\windows command prompt, type "scanreg" without the quotes. This will scan your registry for errors. When this is done, it will offer to let you view some backups, between 5 and 10 may be saved, in date order. Choose a date just before the problem arose, then click restore.
Caution: Any programs and hardware installed after the selected date will need to be reinstalled.
I've seen this fix systems when nothing else would, excepting a format and reload.
Hope this helps...

Well things aint going so well
it seems all the proper and correct usb drivers are installed.i even unistalled the driver which in turn when i rebooted the drivers were installed back on.
i done a registry scan and that came up with no errors.
so im back to square one.
i dont understand, but ive actually formatted my hard drive and reloaded windows on. but still the same problems.
plus i havent got a resonable answer from abit but just to recheck my usb ports. very usefull thanks abit!!!!!
