Im currently having dire usb problems. ive tried everything from updating my drivers to a clean install.i also got hold of a usb program which checks if everything is okay and had no problems there.nothing that requires usb works at all. so i had a look at the irq listings in device manager and it seems the usb controller was sharing with 'acpi irq holder for pci irq steering' and 'sound blaster audio pci'
could these be the problem?
can anyone help please
many thanks

What kind of problems? Do need to install drivers for USB devices in win98. Are you doing that? Windows shares resources by necessity. From what you say that shouldn't stop USB from working. Your description "dire problems" isn't very helpful. Post the exact problems you are having. And what you have tried to do to fix.

Well the problems are just that everything was working fine and then all of a sudden the printer failed to work again, i couldnt upload pics from my camera anymore.basically it seems that the usb ports are just not working.the usb controllers are reconised in device manager and everything is reported as working.

I remember your earlier posts. If the MBD is not under warranty, the fastest way to get you up and running with USB would be to purchase a PCI card that has externally available USB ports. Never bought one, but I know they are available.

If the problem is a software/win98 issue, installing an add in USB card won't help. How many USB ports do you have? How many PCI USB controllers are listed in device manager. Try booting to safe mode and check the USB listings there. Take note is the listings are exactly the same. If you have two controllers with 4 ports, you may want to use different controllers for those devices. Note, there are generally two ports on each controller, and they should be located side by side. If you have a MB CD, a win98 CD, and the device drivers, I suggest you remove all the USB controllers from device manager while in safe mode Then reboot to windows and let the system reinstall the controllers. Then reinstall the drivers for the printer and the camera.

Well i have 2 usb ports coming directly off the mb i also have an extra set of 2 usb ports.they share the same connector which plugs straight into the mb. there is also an extra plug for another set of usb ports if needed.these are refered in the bios as usb1 usb2 and usb3 and they are enabled.
in the device manager it reports that there is 3 usb root hub and 3 via tech 3038 pci to usb universal host controller.

Hiya again
ive posted twice since your last post othehill
ive tried uninstalling the drivers while in safe mode.when the computer rebooted it reinstalled 2 usb hub and 2 pci to usb host controller. but there was a warning mark against other devices with the other pci to usb host controller.but still nothing!!!!!

You may have on USB 1.1 controller and one USB 2.0 controller. Post your MBoard model and version.

Hiya othehill
would just like to say thanks for your help with my usb problems. ive taken a different route and bought myself a new motherboard to more suit the hardware i have.my other mobo was the abit kr7a-raid and i was told it had voltage problems regarding the usb ports. but i was wondering if you could help one more time for me regarding my new mobo. the problem is the computer resets itself when im playing a dvd movie on it. i dont think its the cpu overheating because i had the hardware monitor running and it never went over 49c. it also seems to long to load up win98 even though its running at 1800 mhz.
thanks for your help if you can

TIM
First off all an Athlon 2200XP runs at 1800Mhz. That is the correct speed. As far as the resetting is concerned when viewing a DVD, there could be numerous reasons for that. The first things to check are to verify that you have 3 harddrive controllers showing in your device manager. Primary IDE, seconary IDE, and dual. The dual controller should have a driver that is associated with the MBoard chipset (look at the properties of the controller). Like SIS, VIA, etc. Next verify that DMA is enabled for all drives. To check this, expand the drive listing in device manager and right click a drive. look under properties ato see if DMA is checked. Do that for all drives.

Cheers for your help m8.
i realised that the athlon ran at 1800mhz when i bought the chip and never knew that before.but i seem to have sorted the problem out now by removing my old soundcard.it seems that it was conflicting with the mobo and causing all the problems with my new mobo. i didnt realise that the mobo had its own sound capabilities.so ive taken the old card out and now its running at the speed i bought it for and everythings running top notch meaning no lock ups when i run a dvd etc.
but would just like to say thanks for your continued help. its very much appreciated.
thanks again
