OK, this is a STRANGE problem. I bought a new Lexmark printer, a series 1100 All in one. I installed it, and it works fine.
Then I rebooted the computer, and it Freezes at the Gateway splashscreen. I shut down the computer using the power button, and unplugged the USB cable to the printer. I started the computer, and it started fine. I plugged it in once Windows started, and I was able to use the pritner with no problem.
I restarted it, and again, it froze. As long as the USB is NOT plugged in when the computer starts, everything works fine.
I went into the BIOS, and changed the boot order so Hard drive was first, and "Removable devices" was last. This didn't help. I changed "Plug and Play OS" from NO to Yes. I finally tried to set the BIOS to default conditions, and still it freezes.
Can anyone help???

When you are starting up with the printer connected, does it make any difference whether or not the printer is turned on?

Firstly, go back into cmos and disable the splash screen. This will allow you to see the error messages that bios sends you.

I suspect that it may be a power supply issue. Those Gateways came with a grossly underpowered unit.

If the computer is turned off, it will boot with the USB plugged into it. It is only when the USB printer is on that it won't boot.

I'm sorry, I meant that if the Printer is turned on, the computer will not boot. If the USB printer is OFF, then the computer will boot.

Could just make sure you turn the printer off everytime you shut down the PC as well then... :)

I have a similar printer. It should automatically switch off when you power down. Next time I reboot, I'll try turning the printer on first.

I have seen this on several 98 systems including my own 2 systems, when usb printer is installed on my main system it will not boot even thought it is plugged into a powered usb hub, a friends system will not boot if her multi card reader is connected, unplug it and its fine, my other system will not boot with the external dvd writer conected, all are fine with connecting devices after boot.

oddly since i dual booted XP on both of my systems they will boot into XP or 98 with devices attached . . . . . . .

My main system is set to boot from scsi so shouldn`t be trying to boot from usb ( i doubt its new enough to do so anyway ditto with my other system, my friends system is set to boot fropm C: first, floppy 2nd and cd 3rd and other boot devices are disabled.

To be honest with the powered hubs I just used to unplug the printer or whateverthe plug them in when i needed them.
