My USB ports are suddenly not working. In Device Manager, they've disappeared. I associate this with a recent event: a message popped up telling me I needed to replace my CMOS battery. I clicked "load default values". (I've since replaced the battery.) Could it have something to do with the BIOS? I note that in Advanced Chipset Setup, USB function is "disabled".

It can do no harm enabling the USB function in BIOS to see if this sorts it out. You are probably right.

Sure seems like it - unless 'disabled' has an entirely different meaning.

If you want them to work, try setting to 'enabled'

That's done it! Thanks for your help. Without some advice from others more knowledgable, I was afraid to change any of the BIOS settings.

Well, (hopefully) now you aren't

Many integrated components (such as USB ports) are enabled/disabled via the BIOS - - those sorts of options are quite 'safe' to alter at a whim (and 'disabled' must have been the default for USB)

If you ever do render a machine unbootable due to an unwise CMOS setting, all you'd need to do would be to clear it, which returns everything to the default state
