USB port and scanner

Hi I've got a problem with my computer's USB scanner. The problem seems to be with the USB port but I'm not 100% certain of that. The problem is that the scanner just seems to stutter when it's initialising. I've checked the scanner on another computer and it's fine on that computer. So that means it's just the USB port. The weird thing is that the USB mouse is working fine. Can someone suggest what else might be causing the problem? It's a HP Scanjet4200c.

I also have a 4200c, and no problems, but I bet it is the one individual port itself. Have you tried switching the port, that is putting the mouse in the supposedly bad port and the scanner in the other one? May have to reinstall software in order for recognition but it is one way to check.

Thanks for your response. I've figured out what the problem was. You guys are going to luuurrve this one. It was a game. I've checked it by testing the scanner before I played said game, then after I quit out of the game, the scanner did it's lock up. I knew it can't be the scanner as I've checked the scanner at work on another computer and the mouse is working. Anyway, after I reboot the computer, the scanner starts responding properly again. I think the problem I had was that I didn't get a chance to reset the computer the other day due to a power out. This probably caused some sort of signals/power block. Weird as anything but there you go.
